Residual stress is that which remains in a body that is stationary and at equilibrium with its surroundings. It can be very detrimental to the performance of a material or the life of a component. Alternatively, beneficial residual stresses can be introduced deliberately. Residual stresses are more difficult to predict than the in-service stresses on which they superimpose. For this reason, it is important to have reliable methods for the measurement of these stresses and to understand the level of information they can provide. In this paper, which is the first part of a two part overview, the effect of residual stresses on fatigue lifetimes and structural integrity are first summarised, followed by the definition and measurement of residual stresses. Different types of stress are characterised according to the characteristic length scale over which they self-equilibrate. Residual stress. Part 1 – Measurement techniques

Theoretical models of Schottky-barrier height formation are reviewed. A particular emphasis is placed on the examination of how these models agree with general physical principles. New concepts on the relationship between interface dipole and chemical bond formation are analyzed, and shown to offer a coherent explanation of a wide range of experimental data.

Recent advances in Schottky barrier concepts

The formation of the Schottky barrier height (SBH) is a complex problem because of the dependence of the SBH on the atomic structure of the metal-semiconductor (MS) interface. Existing models of the SBH are too simple to realistically treat the chemistry exhibited at MS interfaces. This article points out, through examination of available experimental and theoretical results, that a comprehensive, quantum-mechanics-based picture of SBH formation can already be constructed, although no simple equations can emerge, which are applicable for all MS interfaces. Important concepts and principles in physics and chemistry that govern the formation of the SBH are described in detail, from which the experimental and theoretical results for individual MS interfaces can be understood. Strategies used and results obtained from recent investigations to systematically modify the SBH are also examined from the perspective of the physical and chemical principles of the MS interface.

Probing surface and interface morphology with Grazing Incidence Small Angle X-Ray Scattering

A new technique utilizing conventional x‐ray diffraction in conjunction with total external reflection has provided a powerful tool for studying ordered interfaces and surface phenomena. It has been used in this work to study the details of the interface region of a molecular beam epitaxially grown Al single crystal on a molecular beam epitaxially grown GaAs single‐crystal substrate. A simple model including variations of the lattice parameter and disorder in the interface region is in agreement with these experimental results.
