An approach to achieve simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature is proposed by using a Mach–Zehnder interferometer realized on tapered single-mode optical fiber. The attenuation peak wavelength of the interference with specific order in the transmission spectrum shifts with changes in the environmental refractive index and temperature. By utilizing S-band and C/L-band light sources, simultaneous discrimination of refractive index and temperature with the tapered fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer is demonstrated with the corresponding sensitivities of −23.188 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) and 0.071 nm/ °C, and −26.087 nm/RIU (blueshift) and 0.077 nm/°C (redshift) for the interference orders of 169 and 144, respectively.

Tapered fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometer for simultaneous measurement of refractive index and temperature

Fiber optic interferometers to sense various physical parameters including temperature, strain, pressure, and refractive index have been widely investigated. They can be categorized into four types: Fabry-Perot, Mach-Zehnder, Michelson, and Sagnac. In this paper, each type of interferometric sensor is reviewed in terms of operating principles, fabrication methods, and application fields. Some specific examples of recently reported interferometeric sensor technologies are presented in detail to show their large potential in practical applications. Some of the simple to fabricate but exceedingly effective Fabry-Perot interferometers, implemented in both extrinsic and intrinsic structures, are discussed. Also, a wide variety of Mach-Zehnder and Michelson interferometric sensors based on photonic crystal fibers are introduced along with their remarkable sensing performances. Finally, the simultaneous multi-parameter sensing capability of a pair of long period fiber grating (LPG) is presented in two types of structures; one is the Mach-Zehnder interferometer formed in a double cladding fiber and the other is the highly sensitive Sagnac interferometer cascaded with an LPG pair.

Interferometric Fiber Optic Sensors

We propose and demonstrate a thinned fiber based Mach-Zehnder interferometer for multi-purpose sensing applications. The sensor head is formed by all-fiber in-line singlemode-multimode-thinned-singlemode (SMTS) fiber structure, only using the splicing method. The principle of operation relies on the effect that the thinned fiber cladding modes interference with the core mode by employing a multimode fiber as a mode coupler. Experimental results showed that the liquid refractive index information can be simultaneously provided from measuring the sensitivity of the liquid level. A 9.00 mm long thinned fiber sensor at a wavelength of 1538.7228 nm exhibits a water level sensitivity of -175.8 pm/mm, and refractive index sensitivity as high as -1868.42 (pm/mm)/RIU, respectively. The measuring method is novel, for the first time to our knowledge. In addition, it also demonstrates that by monitoring the wavelength shift, the sensor at a wavelength of 1566.4785 nm exhibits a refractive index sensitivity of -25.2935 nm/RIU, temperature sensitivity of 0.0615 nm/°C, and axial strain sensitivity of -2.99 pm/μe, respectively. Moreover, the sensor fabrication process is very simple and cost effective.

All-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometers for sensing applications

A simple refractive index sensor based on a Michelson interferometer in a single-mode fiber is constructed and demonstrated. The sensor consists of a single symmetrically abrupt taper region in a short piece of single-mode fiber that is terminated by ~500 nm thick gold coating. The sensitivity of the new sensor is similar to that of a long-period-grating-type sensor, and its ease of fabrication offers a low-cost alternative to current sensing applications.

DOI: 10.1002/adom.201801433 Scientific American selects plasmonic sensing as the top 10 emerging technologies of 2018.[15] Almost every single new plasmonic or photonic structure would be explored to test its sensing ability.[16–29] These works tend to report the sensing performance of their own structure. Some declare that their sensitivity breaks the world record. However, there is still a missing literature on what the world record really is, the gap between the experiments and the theoretical limit, as well as the differences between metal-based plasmonic sensors and dielectric-based photonic sensors. To push plasmonic and photonic sensors into industrial applications, an optical sensing technology map is absolutely necessary. This review aims to cover a wide range of most representative plasmonic and photonic sensors, and place them into a single map. The sensor performances of different structures will be distinctly illustrated. Future researchers could plot the sensing ability of their new sensors into this technology map and gauge their performances in this field. In this review, we focus on optical refractive index (RI) sensors with no fluorescent labeling required. We will utilize two parameters to characterize and compare the performance of optical RI sensors: sensitivity to RI change (denoted by symbol SRI) and figure of merit (in short, FoM). For simplicity, we restrict our discussions to bulk RI change, where the change in RI occurs within the whole sample. There is another case where the RI variation occurs only within a very small volume close to the sensor surface. This surface RI sensitivity is proportional to the bulk RI sensitivity, the ratio of the thickness of the layer within which the surface RI variation occurs, and the penetration depth of the optical mode.[6] The bulk RI sensitivity defines the ratio of the change in sensor output (e.g., resonance angle, intensity, or resonant wavelength) to the bulk RI variations. Here, we limit our discussions to the spectral interrogations and the bulk RI sensitivity SRI is given by[3,5–7,30]

Optical Refractive Index Sensors with Plasmonic and Photonic Structures: Promising and Inconvenient Truth

A novel refractive index (RI) sensor based on a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer was realized by concatenating two single-mode fiber tapers separated by a middle section. The proposed device had a minimum insertion loss of 3 dB and maximum interferometric extinction ratio over 20 dB. The resolution (0.171 nm) of the two-taper sensor to its surrounding RI change (0.01) was found to be comparable to that (0.252 nm) of similar structures made from an identical long-period gratings pair, and its ease of fabrication makes it a low-cost alternative to existing sensing applications.

Refractive Index Sensing With Mach–Zehnder Interferometer Based on Concatenating Two Single-Mode Fiber Tapers

Magnetic hysteresis loops are an important tool in theoretical and applied rock magnetism with applications to paleointensities, paleoenvironmental analysis, and tectonic studies, among many others. Hence, information derived from these data is amongst the most ubiquitous rock magnetic data used by the Earth science community. Despite their prevalence, there are no general guidelines to aid scientists in obtaining the best possible data and no widely available software to allow the efficient analysis of hysteresis loop data using the most advanced and appropriate methods. Here we provide an outline of detrimental factors and simple approaches to measuring better hysteresis loops as well as introducing a new MATLAB software package called Hysteresis Loop analysis box (HystLab) for processing and analyzing loop data. This graphical user interface software is capable of reading the wide range of data formats that are generated by the multiple types of equipment typically used to measure hysteresis loops. HystLab provides an easy-to-use interface allowing users to visualize their data and perform advanced processing, including loop centering, drift correction, linear and approach to saturation high-field slope corrections, as well as loop fitting to improve the results from noisy specimens. A large number of hysteresis loop properties and statistics are calculated by HystLab and can be exported to text files for further analysis. All plots generated by HystLab are customizable and user preferences can be saved for future use. In addition, all plots can be exported to encapsulated postscript (EPS) files that are publication ready with little or no adjustment, greatly enhancing workflow productivity when processing and analyzing large data sets.
