Thanks to advances in electric wheelchair design, persons with motor impairments due to diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), have tools to become more independent and mobile. However, an electric wheelchair generally requires considerable skill to learn how to use and operate. Moreover, some persons with motor disabilities cannot drive an electric wheelchair manually (even with a joystick), because they lack the physical ability to control their hand movement (such is the case with people with ALS). In this paper, we propose a novel system that enables a person with motor disability to control a wheelchair via eye-gaze and to provide a continuous, real-time navigation in unknown environments. The system comprises a Permobile M400 wheelchair, eye tracking glasses, a depth camera to capture the geometry of the ambient space, a set of ultrasound and infrared sensors to detect obstacles with low proximity that are out of the field of view for the depth camera, a laptop placed on a flexible mount for maximized comfort, and a safety off switch to turn off the system whenever needed. First, a novel algorithm is proposed to support continuous, real-time target identification, path planning, and navigation in unknown environments. Second, the system utilizes a novel N-cell grid-based graphical user interface that adapts to input/output interfaces specifications. Third, a calibration method for the eye tracking system is implemented to minimize the calibration overheads. A case study with a person with ALS is presented, and interesting findings are discussed. The participant showed improved performance in terms of calibration time, task completion time, and navigation speed for a navigation trips between office, dining room, and bedroom. Furthermore, debriefing the caregiver has also shown promising results: the participant enjoyed higher level of confidence driving the wheelchair and experienced no collisions through all the experiment.

A Novel Eye-Gaze-Controlled Wheelchair System for Navigating Unknown Environments: Case Study With a Person With ALS

3D model-based gaze estimation methods are widely explored because of their good accuracy and ability to handle free head movement. Traditional methods with complex hardware systems (Eg. infrared lights, 3D sensors, etc.) are restricted to controlled environments, which significantly limit their practical utilities. In this paper, we propose a 3D model-based gaze estimation method with a single web-camera, which enables instant and portable eye gaze tracking. The key idea is to leverage on the proposed 3D eye-face model, from which we can estimate 3D eye gaze from observed 2D facial landmarks. The proposed system includes a 3D deformable eye-face model that is learned offline from multiple training subjects. Given the deformable model, individual 3D eye-face models and personal eye parameters can be recovered through the unified calibration algorithm. Experimental results show that the proposed method outperforms state-of-the-art methods while allowing convenient system setup and free head movement. A real time eye tracking system running at 30 FPS also validates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method.

Real Time Eye Gaze Tracking with 3D Deformable Eye-Face Model

We present a novel, automatic eye gaze tracking scheme inspired by smooth pursuit eye motion while playing mobile games or watching virtual reality contents. Our algorithm continuously calibrates an eye tracking system for a head mounted display. This eliminates the need for an explicit calibration step and automatically compensates for small movements of the headset with respect to the head. The algorithm finds correspondences between corneal motion and screen space motion, and uses these to generate Gaussian Process Regression models. A combination of those models provides a continuous mapping from corneal position to screen space position. Accuracy is nearly as good as achieved with an explicit calibration step.

A Statistical Approach to Continuous Self-Calibrating Eye Gaze Tracking for Head-Mounted Virtual Reality Systems

Appearance-based gaze estimation methods have received increasing attention in the field of human-computer interaction (HCI). These methods tried to estimate the accurate gaze point via Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model, but the estimated accuracy can't reach the requirement of gaze-based HCI when the regression model is used in the output layer of CNN. Given the popularity of button-touch-based interaction, we propose an appearance-based gaze block estimation method, which aims to estimate the gaze block, not the gaze point. In the proposed method, we relax the estimation from point to block, so that the gaze block can be estimated by CNN-based classification instead of the previous regression model. We divide the screen into square blocks to imitate the button-touch interface, and build an eye-image dataset, which contains the eye images labelled by their corresponding gaze blocks on the screen. We train the CNN model according to this dataset to estimate the gaze block by classifying the eye images. The experiments on 6- and 54-block classifications demonstrate that the proposed method has high accuracy in gaze block estimation without any calibration, and it is promising in button-touch-based interaction.

Appearance-based gaze block estimation via CNN classification

At present a lot of gaze estimation methods can get accurate result under ideal conditions, but some practical issues are still the biggest challenges affect the accuracy such as head motion and eye blinking. Improving the accuracy of gaze estimation and the tolerance of head motion are common tasks in the field of gaze estimation. Therefore, this paper aims to propose an accurate gaze estimation method without fixed head pose. The core problem is how to build the mapping relationship between image features and gaze position, and how to resist the head motion through the training samples. To this end, at first, a new input feature, which can well reflect the change of eye image features with different gaze positions, is proposed and it is based on appearance feature and distance feature. So the number of training samples in the process of calibration is significantly reduced. Then l1-optimization is used to select an optimal set, which represents the mapping relationship between input feature and gaze position. At last, a linear equation is fitted to correct the initial estimation bias which is brought by head motion. In this paper, the experimental results demonstrate that our system achieves accurate result with one camera and a small number of calibration points. The accuracy of final gaze estimation is improved by 22 % through compensation equation. In addition, our system is robustness to eye blink and distance change.

Appearance-based gaze estimation under slight head motion

This paper addresses the eye gaze tracking problem using a lowcost andmore convenient web camera in a desktop environment, as opposed to gaze tracking techniques requiring specific hardware, e.g., infrared high-resolution camera and infrared light sources, as well as a cumbersome calibration process. In the proposed method, we first track the human face in a real-time video sequence to extract the eye regions. Then, we combine intensity energy and edge strength to obtain the iris center and utilize the piecewise eye corner detector to detect the eye corner. We adopt a sinusoidal head model to simulate the 3-D head shape, and propose an adaptive weighted facial features embedded in the pose from the orthography and scaling with iterations algorithm, whereby the head pose can be estimated. Finally, the eye gaze tracking is accomplished by integration of the eye vector and the head movement information. Experiments are performed to estimate the eye movement and head pose on the BioID dataset and pose dataset, respectively. In addition, experiments for gaze tracking are performed in real-time video sequences under a desktop environment. The proposed method is not sensitive to the light conditions. Experimental results show that ourmethod achieves an average accuracy of around 1 . 28 ◦ without head movement and 2 . 27 ◦ with minor movement of the head.

Eye Gaze Tracking With a Web Camera in a Desktop Environment

In India, E-vehicles will be the future mode of transport and so batteries become the core of E-vehicles. It will be good if we are able to monitor the battery readings like petrol or diesel level indicator in ordinary vehicles. There are no batteries with its inbuilt monitoring system till now and it is an imperative to invent such batteries. There are some personal applications of such design but large scale inventions need a concrete design. A battery management system is an electronic control system which is used to monitor the parameters of a battery such as voltage, current and power even from a specified distance from the battery environment and enables to cut off the operation whenever required from a specified distance .Till now there are battery system which can only monitor its readings . Our proposed system is capable of monitoring, managing and feed in database.
