Imaging Spectroscopy and the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS)

Satellite imagery is formed by finite digital numbers representing a specific location of ground surface in which each matrix element is denominated as a picture element or pixel. The pixels represent the sensor measurements of spectral radiance. The radiance recorded in the satellite images is then an integrated sum of the radiances of all targets within the instantaneous field of view IFOV of the sensors. Therefore, the radiation detected is caused by a mixture of several different materials within the image pixels. For this reason, spectral unmixing has been used as a technique for analysing the mixture of components in remotely sensed images for almost 30 years. Different spectral unmixing approaches have been described in the literature. In recent years, many authors have proposed more complex models that permit obtaining a higher accuracy and use less computing time. Although the most widely used method consists of employing a single set of endmembers typically three or four on the whole image and using a constrained least squares method to perform the unmixing linearly, every different algorithm has its own merits and no single approach is optimal and applicable to all cases. Additionally, the number of applications using unmixing techniques is increasing. Spectral unmixing techniques are used mainly for providing information to monitor different natural resources agricultural, forest, geological, etc. and environmental problems erosion, deforestation, plagues and disease, forest fires, etc.. This article is a comprehensive exploration of all of the major unmixing approaches and their applications.

Multi- and hyperspectral geologic remote sensing: A review

Geologists have used remote sensing data since the advent of the technology for regional mapping, structural interpretation and to aid in prospecting for ores and hydrocarbons. This paper provides a review of multispectral and hyperspectral remote sensing data, products and applications in geology. During the early days of Landsat Multispectral scanner and Thematic Mapper, geologists developed band ratio techniques and selective principal component analysis to produce iron oxide and hydroxyl images that could be related to hydrothermal alteration. The advent of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer (ASTER) with six channels in the shortwave infrared and five channels in the thermal region allowed to produce qualitative surface mineral maps of clay minerals (kaolinite, illite), sulfate minerals (alunite), carbonate minerals (calcite, dolomite), iron oxides (hematite, goethite), and silica (quartz) which allowed to map alteration facies (propylitic, argillic etc.). The step toward quantitative and validated (subpixel) surface mineralogic mapping was made with the advent of high spectral resolution hyperspectral remote sensing. This led to a wealth of techniques to match image pixel spectra to library and field spectra and to unravel mixed pixel spectra to pure endmember spectra to derive subpixel surface compositional information. These products have found their way to the mining industry and are to a lesser extent taken up by the oil and gas sector. The main threat for geologic remote sensing lies in the lack of (satellite) data continuity. There is however a unique opportunity to develop standardized protocols leading to validated and reproducible products from satellite remote sensing for the geology community. By focusing on geologic mapping products such as mineral and lithologic maps, geochemistry, P-T paths, fluid pathways etc. the geologic remote sensing community can bridge the gap with the geosciences community. Increasingly workflows should be multidisciplinary and remote sensing data should be integrated with field observations and subsurface geophysical data to monitor and understand geologic processes.

The spectral image processing system (SIPS) interactive visualization and analysis of imaging spectrometer data

The Center for the Study of Earth from Space (CSES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, has developed a prototype interactive software system called the ‘‘Spectral Image Processing System (SIPS)’’ using ‘‘IDL’’ (the Interactive Data Language) on UNIX‐based workstations. SIPS is designed to take advantage of the combination of high spectral resolution and spatial data presentation unique to imaging spectrometers. It streamlines analysis of these data by allowing scientists to interact with entire datasets in real‐time. SIPS provides visualization tools for rapid exploratory analysis and numerical tools for quantitative modeling. The user interface is X‐windows‐based, user friendly, and provides ‘‘point and click’’ operation. SIPS is being used for multidisciplinary research concentrating on the use of physically‐based analysis methods to enhance scientific results from imging spectrometer data. The objective of this continuing effort is to develop operational techniques for quantitative analysis of imaging spectrometer data and to make them available to the scientific community prior to the launch of imaging spectrometer satellite systems such as the Earth Observing System (EOS) High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS).

The Spectral Image Processing System (SIPS) - Interactive visualization and analysis of imaging spectrometer data

The Spectral Image Processing System (SIPS) is a software package developed by the Center for the Study of Earth from Space (CSES) at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in response to a perceived need to provide integrated tools for analysis of imaging spectrometer data both spectrally and spatially. SIPS was specifically designed to deal with data from the Airborne Visible/Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) and the High Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (HIRIS), but was tested with other datasets including the Geophysical and Environmental Research Imaging Spectrometer (GERIS), GEOSCAN images, and Landsat TM. SIPS was developed using the 'Interactive Data Language' (IDL). It takes advantage of high speed disk access and fast processors running under the UNIX operating system to provide rapid analysis of entire imaging spectrometer datasets. SIPS allows analysis of single or multiple imaging spectrometer data segments at full spatial and spectral resolution. It also allows visualization and interactive analysis of image cubes derived from quantitative analysis procedures such as absorption band characterization and spectral unmixing. SIPS consists of three modules: SIPS Utilities, SIPS_View, and SIPS Analysis. SIPS version 1.1 is described below.
