Compositions are provided which contain (a) one or more polysiloxanes comprising at least one reactive functional group; a plurality of particles; and, optionally, one or more curing agents comprising at least one functional group that is reactive with any reactive functional group of polysiloxane (a). Additionally, a process for applying the multi-component composite coatings described above to a substrate and coated substrates are provided. A process for preparing the coating compositions also is provided. The multi-component composite coating compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant color-plus-clearcoatings capable of retaining scratch resistance after weathering.

Coating compositions are provided which include a polysiloxane comprising at least one reactive functional group, at least one material comprising at least one reactive functional group, and at least one boron-containing compound. Also provided are multi-layer composite coatings formed from a basecoat deposited from a pigmented coating composition and a topcoat applied over the basecoat, the topcoat deposited from the aforementioned coating composition. Methods for repairing a multi-layer composite coating and coated substrates are also provided. The compositions of the invention provide highly scratch resistant coatings, particularly highly scratch resistant color-plus-clear coatings, which have excellent intercoat adhesion to subsequently applied coating layers.

Water-borne non-toxic high-performance inorganic silicate coatings

Considering the growing awareness of VOC regulation, the development of high solids coatings is imperative in the surface coatings field. An effort has been made in this article to review and provide the synthesis of some new telechelic oligomer type of important film formers such as oligoesters and alkyds, epoxies, oligourethanes and their co-oligomers, and oligoacrylics. All the above categories of telechelic oligomers have been found suitable for formulating high solids coatings except the telechelic oligo-acrylics because these are restricted to methyl methacrylate monomers only which cannot provide widely acceptable film former from the flexibility and adhesion point of view.

Telechelic oligomers for high solids coatings

This article deals with the treatment of barium sulfate extender pigment with iron oxide and its phenomenological adsorption mechanism in the presence of H+ and OH− ions in solution. The pH range taken in the present study is 5–6. By depositing a ferric oxide layer on barium sulfate particles a novel pigment with better optical and functional performance is obtained. This pigment in various coating systems improves physicochemical performance and acts as an active barrier. The treated pigments can be suitably used in different architectural and industrial coatings. The experimental techniques of surface treatment are discussed, along with the instrumental analysis by SEM, EDAX, XRD, etc.

The preparation and characteristics of surface treated barium sulfate extender pigment

The realisation that petroleum reserves are finite, thereby casting doubts on the future availability of petroleum products as industrial raw materials, has rekindled interest on renewable resources like Cashew Nut Shell Liquid (CNSL). CNSL, which is obtained from the shells as a by-product of the cashew nut industry, is one of the few major and economic sources of naturally occurring phenols. The presence of considerable amount of phenolic compound in CNSL makes it an important low cost and widely versatile alternative raw material in several applications, notable in the manufacture of paints and varnishes, production of friction dust for formulating brake linings and clutch facing lamination, production of foundry core oil, rubber compounding and for protecting wood etc. This paper covers the extraction, chemical composition, polymerisation, properties and industrial applications of CNSL and its products.
