Isolating ground-based interferometric gravitational wave observatories from environmental disturbances is one of the great challenges of the advanced detector era. In order to directly observe gravitational waves, the detector components and test masses must be highly inertially decoupled from the ground motion not only to sense the faint strain of space-time induced by gravitational waves, but also to maintain the resonance of the very sensitive 4 km interferometers. 
This article presents the seismic isolation instrumentation and strategy developed for Advanced LIGO interferometers. It reviews over a decade of research on active isolation in the context of gravitational wave detection, and presents the performance recently achieved with the Advanced LIGO observatory. Lastly, it discusses prospects for future developments in active seismic isolation and the anticipated benefits to astrophysical gravitational wave searches. 
Beyond gravitational wave research, the goal of this article is to provide detailed isolation strategy guidelines for sensitive ground-based physics experiments that may benefit from similar levels of inertial isolation.

Seismic isolation of Advanced LIGO: Review of strategy, instrumentation and performance

We propose an upgrade of Advanced LIGO (aLIGO), named LIGO-LF, that focuses on improving the sensitivity in the 5-30 Hz low-frequency band, and we explore the upgrade’s astrophysical applications. We present a comprehensive study of the detector’s technical noises, and show that with the new technologies such as interferometrically-sensed seismometers and balanced-homodyne readout, LIGO-LF can reach the fundamental limits set by quantum and thermal noises down to 5 Hz. These technologies are also directly applicable to the future generation of detectors. LIGO-LF can observe a rich array of astrophysical sources such as binary black holes with total mass up to 2000 M�. The horizon distance of a single LIGO-LF detector will be z ' 6, greatly exceeding aLIGO’s reach. Additionally, for a given source the chirp mass and total mass can be constrained 2 times better, and the effective spin 3-5 times better, than aLIGO. The total number of detected merging black holes will increase by a factor of 16 compared with aLIGO. Meanwhile, LIGO-LF will also significantly enhance the probability of detecting other astrophysical phenomena including the gravitational memory effects and the neutron star r-mode resonances.

Prospects for detecting gravitational waves at 5 Hz with ground-based detectors

We demonstrate the use of a high‐precision ground‐rotation sensor to subtract wind‐induced tilt noise in a horizontal broadband seismometer at frequencies above 10 mHz. The measurement was carried out at the LIGO Hanford Observatory using a low‐frequency flexure‐beam‐balance with an autocollimator readout and a T240 seismometer, located in close proximity to each other. Along their common horizontal axis, the two instruments show significant coherence below 100 mHz, which increases as a function of wind speed due to floor tilt induced by wind pressure on the walls of the building and the ground outside. Under wind speeds of 10–15  m/s, correcting the seismometer for measured ground rotation lowered the signal by a factor of ∼10, between 10 and 100 mHz. This article describes the instruments used, shows representative data for low and high wind speeds, and discusses the tilt subtraction and possible limitations.

Subtracting Tilt from a Horizontal Seismometer Using a Ground‐Rotation Sensor

We present a novel inertial-isolation scheme based on six degree-of-freedom (6D) interferometric sensing of a single reference mass. It is capable of reducing inertial motion by more than two orders of magnitude at 100\,mHz compared with what is achievable with state-of-the-art seismometers. This will enable substantial improvements in the low-frequency sensitivity of gravitational-wave detectors. The scheme is inherently two-stage, the reference mass is softly suspended within the platform to be isolated, which is itself suspended from the ground. The platform is held constant relative to the reference mass and this closed-loop control effectively transfers the low acceleration-noise of the reference mass to the platform. A high loop gain also reduces non-linear couplings and dynamic range requirements in the soft-suspension mechanics and the interferometric sensing.

Tilt-horizontal coupling in inertial sensors limits the performance of active isolation systems such as those used in gravitational wave detectors. Inertial rotation sensors can be used to subtract the tilt component from the signal produced by horizontal inertial sensors, but such techniques are often limited by the sensor noise of the tilt measurement. A different approach is to mechanically filter the tilt transmitted to the horizontal inertial sensor, as discussed in this article. This technique does not require an auxiliary rotation sensor and can produce a lower noise measurement. The concept investigated uses a mechanical suspension to isolate the inertial sensor from input tilt. Modeling and simulations show that such a configuration can be used to adequately attenuate the tilt transmitted to the instrument, while maintaining translation sensitivity in the frequency band of interest. The analysis is supported by experimental results showing that this approach is a viable solution to overcome the tilt problem in the field of active inertial isolation.
