The influence of the non-Newtonian properties of blood on the flow in large arteries: unsteady flow in a 90° curved tube

The potential industrial applications of curved tubes for single- and two-phase flow are reviewed within the context of physics of flow, trends in the development of technology, and its laboratory to industrial-scale commercialization. Comparison of the performance of curved tube configurations demonstrates its edge over the conventional motionless mixers, heat exchangers, and reactors. Alongside, their respective advantages and limitations are also highlighted. Further, a compendium of the available correlations for single- and two-phase friction factor and heat- and mass-transfer coefficient in curved tubes has also been presented. Key issues regarding the design parameters governing the performance of the curved tubes for mixing and heat- and mass-transfer that impact the research, development, and scale-up or scale-down of such devices are also analyzed. Emerging trends for the development of a new class of curved tubes, namely, inverters and serpentine and chaotic devices are also presented.

A Review on the Potential Applications of Curved Geometries in Process Industry

Pressure drop measurement and prediction in curved pipes and elbow bends is reviewed for both laminar and turbulent single-phase fluid flow. For curved pipe under laminar flow, the pressure loss can be predicted both theoretically and using empirical relations. The transitional Reynolds number can be predicted from an empirical relation. Turbulent flow in curved pipes can only be theoretically predicted for large bends but there are a large number of empirical relations that have proved to be accurate. Elbow bends have proven to be difficult to both measure and represent the pressure loss. Methods of overcoming such problems are outlined. There was no reliable method of theoretically predicting pressure drop in elbow bends. Experimental measurements showed considerable scatter unless care was taken to eliminate extraneous effects. Reliable data are highlighted and an empirical method is proposed for calculation of pressure drop in elbow bends.

Residence time distribution of a purely viscous non-Newtonian fluid in helically coiled or spatially chaotic flows

The present work deals with the study of laminar and turbulent flow of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids flowing through helical and Archimedian spiral coils. By using a suitable viscosity expression corresponding to the shear stress prevailing at the wall, Newtonian correlations are shown to be applicable to a non-Newtonian fluid also. Relationships for spiral coils are developed from correlations for helical coils and are successfully compared with the data of Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids.

Friction factor for newtonian and non-newtonian fluid flow in curved pipes

Turbulent flow velocity profiles for the inner and outer flow regions of annul! are proposed. Theoretical expressions for friction factors and entrance region pressure drops are developed and are further extended to the limiting cases of pipes and parallel plates. Experimental data are found to be in good agreement with theoretical results.
