Principles and potential of the anaerobic digestion of waste-activated sludge

Biogas is a valuable renewable energy carrier. It can be exploited directly as a fuel or as a raw material for the production of synthesis gas and/or hydrogen. Methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) are the main constituents, but biogases also contain significant quantities of undesirable compounds (contaminants), such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3) and siloxanes. The existence and quantities of these contaminants depend on the biogas source (i.e., landfills, anaerobic fermentation of manure). Their presence constitutes a major problem because (i) they can be detrimental to any biogas thermal or thermocatalytic conversion device (e.g., corrosion, erosion, fouling); and (ii) they generate harmful environmental emissions. It is therefore important to include biogas purification steps upstream of its final use processes. This review is aimed at presenting the scientific and technical state-of-theart in biogas purification processes. Biogas as a renewable energy fuel – A review of biogas upgrading, utilisation and storage

Over the past two decades, membrane processes have gained a lot of attention for the separation of gases. They have been found to be very suitable for wide scale applications owing to their reasonable cost, good selectivity and easily engineered modules. This critical review primarily focuses on the various aspects of membrane processes related to the separation of biogas, more in specific CO2 and H2S removal from CH4 and H2 streams. Considering the limitations of inorganic materials for membranes, the present review will only focus on work done with polymeric materials. An overview on the performance of commercial membranes and lab-made membranes highlighting the problems associated with their applications will be given first. The development studies carried out to enhance the performance of membranes for gas separation will be discussed in the subsequent section. This review has been broadly divided into three sections (i) performance of commercial polymeric membranes (ii) performance of lab-made polymeric membranes and (iii) performance of mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) for gas separations. It will include structural modifications at polymer level, polymer blending, as well as synthesis of mixed matrix membranes, for which addition of silane-coupling agents and selection of suitable fillers will receive special attention. Apart from an overview of the different membrane materials, the study will also highlight the effects of different operating conditions that eventually decide the performance and longevity of membrane applications in gas separations. The discussion will be largely restricted to the studies carried out on polyimide (PI), cellulose acetate (CA), polysulfone (PSf) and polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) membranes, as these membrane materials have been most widely used for commercial applications. Finally, the most important strategies that would ensure new commercial applications will be discussed (156 references).

Membrane-based technologies for biogas separations

Biogas is a renewable energy source like solar and wind energies and mostly produced from anaerobic digestion (AD). The production of biogas is a well-established technology, but its commercial utilization is limited because on-site purification is needed before its transport or use. Biogas composition varies with the biomass digested and contains mainly methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), as well as traces of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), hydrogen (H2), nitrogen (N2), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2). In some cases dust particles and siloxanes are present. Several purification processes including pressurized water scrubbing, amine swing absorption, pressure swing adsorption, temperature swing adsorption, cryogenic separation and membrane technologies have been developed. Nevertheless, membrane technology is a relatively recent but very promising technology. Also, hybrid processes where membranes are combined with other processes are believed to have lower investment and operation costs compared with other processes. In this report, a discussion on the different materials used to produce membranes for gas separation is given including inorganic, organic and mixed matrix membranes, as well as polymer of intrinsic microporosity (PIM). Advantages and limitations for each type are discussed and comparisons are made in terms of permeability and diffusivity for a range of operating conditions.
