Power is one of the key requirements for the development of economies and upgrading of standards of living of developing countries. Countries such as Bangladesh depend largely on fossil fuels such as diesel fuel and natural gas to produce the main proportion of their electricity. However, this country’s combination of limited natural gas reserves high fuel prices and escalating costs of transmission and distribution lines has greatly increased the unit cost of electricity generation and it is becoming difficult for customers to pay for electricity. On the other hand, burning fuel causes environmental pollution that leads to global warming which is ultimately responsible for climate change and its devastating consequences. In this study, we have recommended a stand-alone system for the traditional consumption of domestic electric use at residential units in Bangladesh. We have shown a comparison of using the stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) system with the traditional grid connection. Although the initial set-up cost is high, it becomes profitable as people are supplied with electricity, which is being generated from PV as a result minimizing the energy cost from the grid, and in addition, they can later make savings from this system. This paper, therefore, aims at determining the optimum size of the rooftop solar home system that will fulfil all the criteria for powering up electrical appliances at an affordable price. Comparative analysis of both energy systems based on the cost calculation has been performed by means of the Hybrid Optimization of Multiple Energy Renewables (HOMER) software. The validity of this proposal and its usefulness is also analysed.

System and Cost Analysis of Stand-Alone Solar Home System Applied to a Developing Country

In India about 70% of overall electricity generation is based upon thermal energy. Huge amounts of non renewable sources such as coal are being consumed for the production of thermal power which leads us to degradation of the environment. Hence it is imperative to shift to renewable sources like solar energy for the generation of electricity. At present scenario generation using solar power is perceived be too costly. Installation of solar equipment for the typical house hold is difficult as enough technical awareness is lacking in choosing suitable components with appropriate ratings. In this paper a mathematical model is suggested, which can perform techno-economical analysis of off-grid rooftop solar system. Two detailed illustrative examples are mentioned using the realistic load specifications and cost of solar technologies available in Indian markets. For a typical hostel building having 192 rooms in 6-floors, the cost of rooftop solar PV system is about Rs. 1.33 Crores, with a life time profit of Rs. 1.95 Crores (in 25 years). The payback period is 10 years with reduction in CO 2 emissions of 4490 tons. This paper although using a conservative model, is based on prevailing market conditions, makes a compelling case for consumers shifting from utility grid to rooftop solar PV systems.

Techno-economic analysis of off-grid rooftop solar PV system

A chronological review of prospects of solar photovoltaic systems in Bangladesh: Feasibility study analysis, policies, barriers, and recommendations

The fossil fuel is decreasing rapidly and excessive use of such fuels is also hazardous for the environment. Hence, renewable energy usage is the inevitable alternative to meet up electricity demand for the developing country like Bangladesh. Although solar technology has nearly been successful in rural areas where most of the technologies are adopted based on Solar Home System(SHS), it has not yet been effective in urban areas after the imposed rule of installing solar system to get new electricity connection from power utility for various reasons. In this paper, the investigation result of the installed solar system in an area in Dhaka is presented. The overall problems regarding the connection of the system components are analyzed. Efficiency calculation for the active solar home systems is provided through cost comparison analysis by HOMER software. Some proposals are provided which can be implemented to make the concept of solar home system popular in urban ares of Bangladesh to decrease the pressure on our national grid.

Technical Economic Analysis of Photovoltaic Systems in Heterogeneous Mobile Networks

Acute power crisis in Bangladesh stresses on the necessity of alternative sources of power generation in short, mid and long term basis. If solar panels be the alternative short term power source, then per unit production cost is a huge barrier in making this technology popular among the mass. But, urban house owners are under a mandatory condition of installing solar panels on their rooftop to get new electricity connection from power utilities. In such a situation, a solar energy rate has been proposed that will cover the solar electricity production cost, alternately called the cost recovery scheme. This rate is near about the maximum per unit rate of energy the government purchases from quick rental plants. Also, different types of solar modules have been compared. This can be a technical support for the city dwellers to who wants to buy solar panels. In this paper, a typical 6 storied building has been surveyed for the calculation of annual average electricity consumption and selected for solar PV design utilizing the unused rooftop of the building.
