With the invention of new interaction devices and the requirements for ubiquitous access to application systems, user's interactions have moved beyond the desktop and evolved into a trend of ongoing development. The context in which the application is being used becomes an integral part of the activity carried out with the system. The inclusion of context-awareness provides convenience and efficiency to users for their ubiquitous access. Traditional human-computer interface (HCI) theories are now inadequate for developing these context-aware applications, as we believe that the notion of context should be extended to different categories: computing contexts, user contexts, and physical contexts for ubiquitous computing. This demands a new paradigm for system requirements elicitation and design in order to make good use of such extended context information. In this paper, we introduce a methodology for the elicitation of context-aware requirements and the matching of context-awareness features to the target context by capability matching. Based on this model, we analyze the design issues of some common ubiquitous access situations and show how to fit them systematically into a context-aware application by considering the requirements of a ubiquitous tourist application.

Requirements elicitation for the design of context-aware applications in a ubiquitous environment

Developing applications targeting mobile devices is a complex task involving numerous options, technologies, and trade-offs, mostly due to the proliferation and fragmentation of devices and platforms. As a result of this, cross-platform app development has enjoyed the attention of practitioners and academia for the previous decade. Throughout this review, we assess the academic body of knowledge and report on the state of research on the field. We do so with a particular emphasis on core concepts, including those of user experience, device features, performance, and security. Our findings illustrate that the state of research demand for empirical verification of an array of unbacked claims, and that a particular focus on qualitative user-oriented research is essential. Through our outlined taxonomy and state of research overview, we identify research gaps and challenges, and provide numerous suggestions for further research.

A Survey and Taxonomy of Core Concepts and Research Challenges in Cross-Platform Mobile Development

Mobile devices have changed how we conceive software. There is a great range of development alternatives. In this paper, four different multi-platform development approaches (mobile web applications, hybrid, interpreted, and cross-compiled) are analyzed, and their most significant features through a case study are discussed.

Resumen. El auge de los dispositivos moviles ha generado nuevos desafios para los ingenieros de software. Las capacidades tecnicas ofrecidas, asi como sus restricciones, plantean un escenario fertil, pero complejo. Existen diferentes alternativas de desarrollo de una misma aplicacion para un dispositivo movil. En este trabajo se presentan los enfoques de desarrollo de software existentes, sus caracteristicas mas destacadas, y un caso experimental que permite analizar las ventajas y dificultades de cada enfoque.

Un análisis experimental de tipo de aplicaciones para dispositivos móviles

The purpose of software development is meeting both functional and non-functional requirements. In mobile device applications, non-functional requirements are more relevant due to the restrictions inherent to these devices. The performance of a mobile application affects user preference for use. In this article, we present a performance study of the approaches used to develop software for mobile devices for the two currently more commonly used operating systems: iOS and Android. The results obtained are analyzed, and conclusions supported by the tests carried out are drawn.

Approaches to mobile application development: Comparative performance analysis

The development frameworks and the power efficiency in mobile devices have been studied separately. This paper deals with both topics together to determine how the selection of a development framework can impact on energy consumption of a mobile application. The focus is on applications with high processing load, audio and video playback. The results were analyzed and conclusions were reached.

Development frameworks for mobile devices: a comparative study about energy consumption

The New World arenavirus Junin (JUNV) is the etiological agent of Argentine hemorrhagic fever (AHF). Previous studies of human macrophage infection by the Old-World arenaviruses Mopeia and Lassa showed that while the non-pathogenic Mopeia virus replicates and activates human macrophages, the pathogenic Lassa virus replicates but fails to activate human macrophages. Less is known in regard to the impact of New World arenavirus infection on the human macrophage immune response. Macrophage activation is critical for controlling infections but could also be usurped favoring immune evasion. Therefore, it is crucial to understand how the JUNV infection modulates macrophage plasticity to clarify its role in AHF pathogenesis. With this aim in mind, we compared infection with the attenuated Candid 1 (C#1) or the pathogenic P strains of the JUNV virus in human macrophage cultures. The results showed that both JUNV strains similarly replicated and induced morphological changes as early as 1 day post-infection. However, both strains differentially induced the expression of CD71, the receptor for cell entry, the activation and maturation molecules CD80, CD86, and HLA-DR and selectively modulated cytokine production. Higher levels of TNF-α, IL-10, and IL-12 were detected with C#1 strain, while the P strain induced only higher levels of IL-6. We also found that C#1 strain infection skewed macrophage polarization to M1, whereas the P strain shifted the response to an M2 phenotype. Interestingly, the MERTK receptor, that negatively regulates the immune response, was down-regulated by C#1 strain and up-regulated by P strain infection. Similarly, the target genes of MERTK activation, the cytokine suppressors SOCS1 and SOCS3, were also increased after P strain infection, in addition to IRF-1, that regulates type I IFN levels, which were higher with C#1 compared with P strain infection. Together, this differential activation/polarization pattern of macrophages elicited by P strain suggests a more evasive immune response and may have important implications in the pathogenesis of AHF and underpinning the development of new potential therapeutic strategies.
