A dual input DC-DC converter with dual boost and integrated voltage multiplier cell operating at duty cycles larger than 0.5 is a necessity to achieve a high voltage gain for energy systems possessing two independent renewable energy resources. Output voltage regulation during load changes and input disturbances is the requisite of an energy system, which is achieved by the implementation of a suitable control action, which further requires the dynamic model of the converter. The modelling of this higher order converter with overlapping switching signals is complicated. The small-signal transfer function model based on state-space averaging followed by small-signal linearisation is verified using MATLAB and powersim (PSIM). The output voltage to duty cycle transfer functions significantly contributes to representing the converter dynamics from which its right-half s
-plane zero is analysed. Since it is a non-minimum phase system, a dual loop control strategy is adopted. Voltage regulation and active current sharing are ensured from the simulation and experimental responses of the uncompensated and compensated systems. Further, from the derived integer-order converter model a fractional controller is designed and its dynamic response is compared with the traditional controller. A 200 W prototype of the converter is developed, and the control is implemented using field-programmable gate array.

Modelling and control of dual input boost converter with voltage multiplier cell

A high step-up/high-efficiency converter is one of the essential requirements of a low power grid-connected photovoltaic system that provides the maximum power point tracking ability and injects the low voltage extracted power to AC or DC distribution network. This study presents a common-ground non-isolated high-gain DC/DC converter whit a naturally wide range of soft-switching conditions. The proposed converter has two resonant loops, and a new simple structure consists of an active switch, three diodes, two inductors and two capacitors, work in two useful operation modes. In the optimum operation mode (OOM), the switch turns on/off in zero current switching (ZCS)/zero voltage switching condition, and at the sub-OOM, the switch turns on in ZCS condition and turns off in hard switching condition. The mathematical analysis and MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results are described in detail. Also, a prototype 100 W converter is built and tested to validate the simulation analysis on a 100 W photovoltaic panel.

Common-ground non-isolated high-gain DC/DC converter for low powerdistributed generation photovoltaic systems

The recent development in high gain DC–DC converters motivates its application on renewable energy systems with low output voltage such as photovoltaic cells resulting in the requirement of high voltage gain converters with improved static and dynamic characteristics. This study proposes an optimal reduced order linear quadratic regulator controller for a reduced order model of a voltage multiplier cell (VMC) integrated boost converter with two sensors for measuring the output voltage and the input inductor current. The dynamic performance of linear quadratic regulator controller over load, line and component perturbations are shown through extensive simulation studies on the reduced order model developed and the comparison is accomplished with conventional hysteresis current controller in order to disclose the best control technique in terms of dynamic response. The extensive analysis based on simulated results are verified exactly with a measured results in a 100 W prototype operating in continuous conduction mode VMC integrated boost converter controlled using DSPIC30F4011 processor. The control technique proposed computes error coefficients with less computation time, guarantees excellent system stability and offers improved dynamic characteristics for VMC integrated boost converter with reduced number of sensors.

Reduced order linear quadratic regulator controller for voltage multiplier cells integrated boost converter

Photovoltaic cell produces weak voltage which should be increased. In fact, the DC / DC converters managed the energy flow between the photovoltaic generator and the battery module which impose the DC bus voltage, with a great flexibility in order to achieve the appropriate voltage level. In this work, we illustrate the functioning principle of three converters as well as the mathematical model and also we make comparison between these topologies. A simulation of topologies in MATLAB will also be realized. Indeed, the best choice of topology allows increasing the photovoltaic installation efficiency whatever the meteorological conditions and the system eminent effect.

Small-signal model and control approach for a dual input boost converter with VMC

This paper presents a reduced order sliding mode controller based on hysteresis modulation for a boost converter with single voltage multiplier cell (VMC) operating in continuous conduction mode. Although VMC integrated boost converter improves the static gain without extreme duty cycle, it increases the number of components which in turn increases the order of the system. Due to complexity in control of higher order converters, a reduced order sliding mode controller is suggested in this study to reduce the number of sensors. Both static and dynamic performances are improved by considering only two control parameters, the input inductor current and the output capacitor voltage of the VMC integrated boost converter. The robustness of SMC over line variation, load variation and parameter variations are revealed through simulation and compared with conventional PI controller. Inrush current of the VMC integrated boost converter is observed to be high and a startup control with an auxiliary diode is incorporated. A prototype model of a 100 W boost converter with single VMC controlled by SMC is designed and implemented to validate the simulated results. A VMC integrated boost converter with SMC approach offers high voltage gain at reduced duty cycle with improved dynamic characteristics.
