Randomized, Prospective Trial of Antioxidant Supplementation in Critically Ill Surgical Patients
Avery B. Nathens,Margaret J. Neff,Gregory J. Jurkovich,Patricia Klotz,Katherine Farver,John T. Ruzinski,Frank Radella,Iris Garcia,Ronald V. Maier +8 more
TL;DR: To determine the effectiveness of early, routine antioxidant supplementation using α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid in reducing the rate of pulmonary morbidity and organ dysfunction in critically ill surgical patients.
Journal ArticleDOI
Epidural analgesia improves outcome after multiple rib fractures.
TL;DR: It is found that epidural analgesia is associated with a decrease in the rate of nosocomial pneumonia and a shorter duration of mechanical ventilation after rib fractures, which is limited in the trauma population due to numerous exclusion criteria.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of Out-of-Hospital Tranexamic Acid vs Placebo on 6-Month Functional Neurologic Outcomes in Patients With Moderate or Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.
Susan E. Rowell,Susan E. Rowell,Eric N. Meier,Barbara McKnight,Delores Kannas,Susanne May,Kellie Sheehan,Eileen M. Bulger,Ahamed H. Idris,Jim Christenson,Jim Christenson,Laurie J. Morrison,Ralph J. Klein,Sandro Rizoli,Mark Gamber,Michael Fleming,Jun Hwang,Laura Vincent,Carolyn Williams,Audrey Hendrickson,Robert Simonson,Patricia Klotz,George Sopko,William R. Witham,Michael Ferrara,Martin A. Schreiber +45 more
TL;DR: Among patients with moderate to severe TBI, out-of-hospital tranexamic acid administration within 2 hours of injury compared with placebo did not significantly improve 6-month neurologic outcome as measured by the Glasgow Outcome Scale-Extended.
Journal ArticleDOI
The health-related quality of life of children with an extremity fracture: a one-year follow-up study.
Ru Ding,Melissa L. McCarthy,Eileen Houseknecht,Susan Ziegfeld,Vinita Misra Knight,Patricia Korehbandi,Donna Parnell,Patricia Klotz +7 more
TL;DR: Children hospitalized for an extremity fracture suffered dramatic declines in physical and psychosocial well-being during the first 3 months postinjury; by 1 year postin injury, most children recovered; however, children with a tibia and/or fibula fracture still reported significantly poorer physical functioning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Oxandrolone does not improve outcome of ventilator dependent surgical patients.
TL;DR: Ventilator-dependent surgical patients receiving oxandrolone had a more prolonged course of mechanical ventilation, suggesting that ox androlone may be detrimental in this circumstance.
