Approximately 10 to 15% of couples are impacted by infertility. Recently, the pivotal role that lifestyle factors play in the development of infertility has generated a considerable amount of interest. Lifestyle factors are the modifiable habits and ways of life that can greatly influence overall health and well-being, including fertility. Many lifestyle factors such as the age at which to start a family, nutrition, weight, exercise, psychological stress, environmental and occupational exposures, and others can have substantial effects on fertility; lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking, illicit drug use, and alcohol and caffeine consumption can negatively influence fertility while others such as preventative care may be beneficial. The present literature review encompasses multiple lifestyle factors and places infertility in context for the couple by focusing on both males and females; it aims to identify the roles that lifestyle factors play in determining reproductive status. The growing interest and amount of research in this field have made it evident that lifestyle factors have a significant impact on fertility.

Many studies have reported that the contents of cigarette smoke negatively affect sperm parameters, seminal plasma, and various other fertility factors. Nevertheless, the actual effect of smoking on male fertility is not clear. The effect of smoking on semen parameters is based on the well-established biological finding that smoking increases the presence of reactive oxygen species, thereby resulting in oxidative stress (OS). OS has devastating effects on sperm parameters, such as viability and morphology, and impairs sperm function, hence reducing male fertility. However, not all studies have come to the same conclusions. This review sheds light upon the arguable association between smoking and male fertility and also assesses the impact of non-smoking routes of tobacco consumption on male infertility. It also highlights the evidence that links smoking with male infertility, including newly emerging genetic and epigenetic data, and discusses the clinical implications thereof.

Objective
Antiovarian autoantibodies (AOA) have been associated with reproductive failure, especially in in vitro fertilization (IVF) patients. Thus, the success rate of IVF might be improved by the use of corticosteroids. However, therapeutic trials with these drugs have yielded conflicting results, particularly because of heterogeneous inclusion criteria. Among women with previous IVF failure, we selected those who presented with a positive serum AOA assay, and analysed the efficacy of corticosteroids in improving the IVF outcome in these patients.

Corticosteroids in patients with antiovarian antibodies undergoing in vitro fertilization: a prospective pilot study.

It has been shown that preconceptional screening for oocyte aneuploidies could help increase the pregnancy rate after in vitro fertilization (IVF), particularly in cases of advanced maternal age. The FISH (fluorescent in situ hybridization) technique is usually used to examine the first polar body (I-PB) for oocyte screening and so avoid fertilizing and transferring embryos from aneuploid oocytes. We have tested the feasibility of using another technique, the primed in situ (PRINS) reaction for this purpose. PRINS is a rapid, inexpensive method of labelling chromosomes. Chromosomes were labelled by in situ annealing with chromosome-specific oligonucleotide primers, followed by primer extension with labelled nucleotides using Taq DNA polymerase. A total of 183 PRINS reactions were performed with primers for chromosomes 13, 16, 18, 21 or X on 63 I-PBs removed from oocytes that failed to become fertilized during IVF. Each I-PB underwent three successive double-labelling reactions and intense signals were obtained in less than 40 min. Our data suggest that PRINS may be a useful alternative or a complement to FISH for detecting the main aneuploidies in all oocytes obtained after follicular puncture.

La proteina transportadora de les hormones sexuals (SHBG) va ser descrita a finals dels anys
seixanta amb les funcions de transportar els esteroides sexuals i de regular-ne la biodisponibilitat.
Des de fa ja bastant temps, es coneix tambe que les cell. ules testiculars de Sertoli expressen la
proteina que lliga els androgens (androgen-binding protein oABP), que esta codificada pel mateix
gen que la SHBG, pero glicosilada diferentment. Les funcions de l'ABP han estat ampliament
estudiades, i actualment se sap ja que l'ABP es un dels reguladors locals de l'espermatogenesi.
Nogensmenys, la presencia de la SHBG en l'ovari ha estat molt poc estudiada. L'objectiu del
present article es el de revisar el que actualment es coneix sobre l'expressio de la SHBG en la
gonada femenina, incloent-hi les troballes recents del nostre grup que demostren la presencia
de la SHBG en els foll. icles ovarics, particularment en el citoplasma de les cell. ules de la granulosa,
en algunes cell. ules de la teca i en els oocits de foll. icles primordials, primaris i secundaris, i
tambe en el cos luti. A mes, l'expressio del gen de la SHBG s'ha evidenciat tambe en les cell. ules
granulosoluteiniques en pacients sotmeses a fertilitzacio in vitro. Aixo suggereix que aquestes
cell. ules constitueixen una font local de SHBG en l'ovari huma. Aquestes noves dades suggereixen
la implicacio de la SHBG en la fisiologia ovarica.
