Approximately 10 to 15% of couples are impacted by infertility. Recently, the pivotal role that lifestyle factors play in the development of infertility has generated a considerable amount of interest. Lifestyle factors are the modifiable habits and ways of life that can greatly influence overall health and well-being, including fertility. Many lifestyle factors such as the age at which to start a family, nutrition, weight, exercise, psychological stress, environmental and occupational exposures, and others can have substantial effects on fertility; lifestyle factors such as cigarette smoking, illicit drug use, and alcohol and caffeine consumption can negatively influence fertility while others such as preventative care may be beneficial. The present literature review encompasses multiple lifestyle factors and places infertility in context for the couple by focusing on both males and females; it aims to identify the roles that lifestyle factors play in determining reproductive status. The growing interest and amount of research in this field have made it evident that lifestyle factors have a significant impact on fertility.

Many studies have reported that the contents of cigarette smoke negatively affect sperm parameters, seminal plasma, and various other fertility factors. Nevertheless, the actual effect of smoking on male fertility is not clear. The effect of smoking on semen parameters is based on the well-established biological finding that smoking increases the presence of reactive oxygen species, thereby resulting in oxidative stress (OS). OS has devastating effects on sperm parameters, such as viability and morphology, and impairs sperm function, hence reducing male fertility. However, not all studies have come to the same conclusions. This review sheds light upon the arguable association between smoking and male fertility and also assesses the impact of non-smoking routes of tobacco consumption on male infertility. It also highlights the evidence that links smoking with male infertility, including newly emerging genetic and epigenetic data, and discusses the clinical implications thereof.

Smoking and Male Infertility: An Evidence-Based Review

Density functional theory studies (DFT) have been carried out to evaluate the ability of polyaniline emeraldine salt (PANI ES) from 2 to 8 phenyl rings as sensor for NH3, CO2, and CO. The sensitivity and selectivity of nPANI ES among NH3, CO2, and CO are studied at UB3LYP/6-31G(d) level of theory. Interaction of nPANI ES with CO is studied from both O (CO(1)) and C (CO(2)) sides of CO. Interaction energy, NBO, and Mulliken charge analysis were used to evaluate the sensing ability of PANI ES for different analytes. Interaction energies are calculated and corrected for BSSE. Large forces of attraction in nPANI ES-NH3 complexes are observed compared to nPANI ES–CO2, nPANI ES-CO(1), and nPANI ES-CO(2) complexes. The inertness of +C≡O– in nPANI ES-CO(1) and nPANI ES-CO(2) complexes are also discussed. The influence of cigarette smoking on human sperm quality and DNA fragmentation.

Cigarette smoking has negative effects on male fertility. Recent studies showed an active transfer of several components of cigarettes through the blood-testis barrier. The presence of these components in the seminal plasma may induce a degradation of sperm parameters and nuclear quality of spermatozoa, and compromise the chances of pregnancy. Moreover, smoking may have a negative impact on the smokers'offspring: poor quality embryos, development of childhood cancers. Oxidative stress-induced DNA damage seems to be one of the major causes of sperm quality alteration. Several methods are now available to analyze the degree of DNA fragmentation. In order to optimize the success rate of assisted reproduction technologies, the deleterious effects of smoking on male fertility and the necessity of cessation have to be explained in detail to these patients.

Malgre l’existence de nombreux moyens d’etude de la vitalite des spermatozoides, la plupart restent dans le domaine de la recherche biomedicale. Ce sont surtout les tests classiques, tels que le test a l’eosinenigrosine et le test de gonflement flagellaire en milieu hypo-osmolaire (HOST) qui permettent d’apprecier le pourcentage de vitalite des spermatozoides en spermiologie courante. Un resultat anormalement bas definit la necrozoospermie, dont l’interpretation est souvent difficile, mais permet d’orienter le bilan masculin vers la recherche de certains contextes etiologiques, notamment celui des infections genitales chroniques.
