Estimation and inference in two-stage, semi-parametric models of production processes

We examine a policy for managing modem pools that disconnects users only if not enough modems are available for other users to connect. Managing the modem pool then becomes a replacement problem, similar to buffer cache management (e.g., in virtual memory systems). When a new connection request is received, the system needs to find a user to "replace". In this paper we examine such demand-disconnect schemes using extensive activity data from actual ISPs. We discuss various replacement policies and propose CIRG: a novel replacement algorithm that is well suited for modem pools. In general, the choice of algorithm is significant. A naive algorithm (e.g., one that randomly replaces any user who has been inactive for a while) incurs many tens of percent more "faults" (i.e., disconnections of users who are likely to want to be active again soon) than the LRU algorithm, which, in turn, incurs 10% more faults than CIRG. For good replacement algorithms, the impact can be significant in terms of resource requirements. We show that the same standards of service as a system that does not disconnect idle users can be achieved with up to 13% fewer modems.

Statistical Inference in Nonparametric Frontier Models: the State of the Art

Non-parametric data envelopment analysis (DEA) estimators based on linear programming methods have been widely applied in analyses of productive efficiency. The distributions of these estimators remain unknown except in the simple case of one input and one output, and previous bootstrap methods proposed for inference have not been proven consistent, making inference doubtful. This paper derives the asymptotic distribution of DEA estimators under variable returns-to-scale. This result is then used to prove that two different bootstrap procedures (one based on sub-sampling, the other based on smoothing) provide consistent inference. The smooth bootstrap requires smoothing the irregularly-bounded density of inputs and outputs as well as smoothing of the DEA frontier estimate. Both bootstrap procedures allow for dependence of the inefficiency process on output levels and the mix of inputs in the case of input-oriented measures, or on inputs levels and the mix of outputs in the case of output-oriented measures.

Asymptotics and Consistent Bootstraps for DEA Estimators in Non-parametric Frontier Models

Since 1985, the share of U.S. depository institution assets held by credit unions has nearly doubled, and the average (inflation-adjusted) size of credit unions has increased over 600 percent. We use a non-parametric local-linear estimator to estimate a cost relationship for credit unions and derive estimates of ray-scale and expansion-path scale economies. We employ a dimension-reduction technique to reduce estimation error, and bootstrap methods for inference. We find substantial evidence of increasing returns to scale across the range of sizes observed among credit unions, suggesting that an easing of regulations on credit union membership or activities would lead to further increases in the size of credit unions.

The [2 + 2] photocycloaddition of monothiomaleimides (MTMs) has been exploited for the photocrosslinking of polyacrylamides. Polymer scaffolds composed of dimethylacrylamide and varying amounts of d,l-homocysteine thiolactone acrylamide (5, 10, and 20 mol %) were synthesized via free-radical polymerization, whereby the latent thiol functionality was exploited to incorporate MTM motifs. Subsequent exposure to UV light (λ = 365 nm, 15 mW cm–2) triggered intermolecular crosslinking via the photodimerization of MTM side chains, thus resulting in the formation of polyacrylamide gels. The polymer scaffolds were characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, UV–visible spectroscopy, 1H NMR spectroscopy, and size exclusion chromatography, confirming the occurrence of the [2 + 2] photocycloaddition between the MTM moieties. The mechanical and physical properties of the resulting gels containing various MTM mol % were evaluated by rheology, compression testing, and swelling experiments. In addition, scanning electron microscopy was used to characterize the xerogel morphology of 5 and 10 mol % MTM hydro- and organo-gels. The macro-porous morphology obtained for the hydrogels was attributed to phase separation due to the difference in solubility of the PDMA modified with thiolactone side chains, provided that a more homogeneous morphology was obtained when the photo-gels were prepared in DMF as the solvent.
