In spite of great concern on the wide application of silicone rubber foams, few works have been reported about easy-operating foaming method. In this study, the effects of silica content and foaming process on the porous structure of high-temperature-vulcanized silicon rubber foams are evaluated, which are prepared by supercritical CO2 at different conditions, with fumed silica used for reinforcement. Silicone rubber foams with cell size in 8–120 μm, cell density in 105–108 cm−3, and density between 0.45 and 0.9 g cm−3 are prepared under different saturation conditions. The results show that increasing silica content can decrease cell size. It is also found that cell density improves exponentially with increasing saturation pressure and decreasing saturation temperature. Besides, it demands less than 1 h for specimens to reach equilibrium on thickness around 3 mm. All the results indicate that the porous structures of silicone foams can be tailored by foaming process parameters facilely and are predictable with fitted equation.

Shock response of filled corrugated sandwich structures under extreme temperatures

Syntactic foams are one of the most widely used close cell structured foams. They are used in applications for naval, aeronautical, aerospace, civil, industrial, and automotive engineering due to good acoustical attenuation, excellent strength to weight ratio, vibration isolation, and dielectric properties. These foams are fabricated by incorporation of hollow particles in a matrix material. The most preferred matrix materials are polymers. In this study silicone resin (useful temperature range −53 ◦C to 232 ◦C) was selected as a binder material. Glass bubbles were incorporated into the silicone resin at three di erent mass percentages (10%, 20%, and 30%). The density of the silicone was reduced more than 50% by 30% glass bubble contribution. The foam mechanical properties were investigated in a room temperature and after heat treatment at 500 ◦C by quasi-static compression experiments. Microstructural transitions by the temperature raises were examined by using scanning electron microscopy pictures. It was observed that the increase of glass bubble percentage in silicone rubber enhanced the energy absorption properties in the heat treated and room temperature specimens. Plateau stress and densi cation amount were improved under quasi-static compression load by the glass bubble percentage increase. It can be said that developed syntactic foams can be used in heat resistant, low weight and high compression strength exigencies.

Development of a polymer based syntactic foam for high temperature applications

An experimental investigation of the dynamic response of syntactic foam filled corrugated steel sandwich panels, subjected to shock loading at room and elevated temperatures, was performed. A shock tube apparatus was used to generate the shock loading. High speed photography coupled with 3D Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to obtain real time full-field deformation of the back face. An additional camera was used to capture side-view deformation images. Photo-optical techniques were incorporated to capture images during high temperature experiments. The shock pressure profiles and DIC analysis were used to obtain the impulse imparted on the specimen, transient deflections, in-plane strain, and out of plane velocity of the back face sheet. It was observed that using the syntactic foam as a filler material decreased the front face and back face deflections compared to an empty panel while maintaining a thermal gradient of at least 180 °C. As a consequence of temperature dependent properties of steel, the specimen demonstrated an increasing trend in back face deflection with increasing temperature.
