The research in circularly polarized luminescence has attracted wide interest in recent years. Efforts on one side are directed toward the development of chiral materials with both high luminescence efficiency and dissymmetry factors, and on the other side, are focused on the exploitations of these materials in optoelectronic applications. This review summarizes the recent frontiers (mostly within five years) in the research in circularly polarized luminescence, including the development of chiral emissive materials based on organic small molecules, compounds with aggregation-induced emissions, supramolecular assemblies, liquid crystals and liquids, polymers, metal-ligand coordination complexes and assemblies, metal clusters, inorganic nanomaterials, and photon upconversion systems. In addition, recent applications of related materials in organic light-emitting devices, circularly polarized light detectors, and organic lasers and displays are also discussed.

Frontiers in circularly polarized luminescence: molecular design, self-assembly, nanomaterials, and applications

Chiral materials with intrinsic inversion-symmetric structures possess many unique physicochemical features, including circular dichroism, circularly polarized photoluminescence, nonlinear optics, ferroelectricity, and spintronics. Halide perovskites have attracted considerable attention owing to their excellent optical and electrical properties, which are particularly suitable for realizing high power-conversion efficiency in solar cells. Recent studies have shown that chirality can be transferred from chiral organic ligands into halide perovskites and the resultant chiral perovskites combine the advantages of both chiral materials and halide perovskites; this provides an ideal platform to design next-generation optoelectronic and spintronic devices. In this progress report, the most recent advances are summarized in various chemical structures of chiral perovskites, their synthesis strategies, chirality generation mechanisms, and physical properties. Furthermore, the potential chiral-halide-perovskite-based applications are presented and the challenges and prospects of chiral perovskites are discussed. This report outlines the diverse construction strategies of and proposes research directions for chiral halide perovskites; thus, it provides insights into the design of novel chiral perovskites and facilitates investigation of the optoelectronic applications that employ chirality.

Recent Progress of Chiral Perovskites: Materials, Synthesis, and Properties

Chiral perovskites with circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) performance have attracted tremendous attention. This contribution reports a convenient and universal strategy for constructing chiral helical polymer/perovskite hybrid nanofibers with outstanding CPL properties. The hybrid nanofibers are prepared through a one-step electrospinning method in which chiral helical polyacetylenes, perovskite nanocrystals, and polyacrylonitrile serve as a handed-selective fluorescence filter, fluorescent source, and electrospinning matrix, respectively. Specially, perovskite nanocrystals are in situ formed during the electrospinning process, which avoids the tedious process for preparing and purifying perovskites. The prepared hybrid nanofibers all exhibit good long-time stability in air, owing to the effective protection effect of polymer matrix. More importantly, intense CPL emissions with high dissymmetry factor up to 10-2 level are obtained in the hybrid nanofibers. Furthermore, the emission color of CPL can be easily tuned by adjusting the precursors of perovskites. This work provides an efficient technique toward various kinds of CPL-active perovskite nanomaterials for both scientific research and future practical applications.

Chiral Helical Polymer/Perovskite Hybrid Nanofibers with Intense Circularly Polarized Luminescence.

Abstract Chiral nanomaterials with intrinsic chirality or spatial asymmetry at the nanoscale are currently in the limelight of both fundamental research and diverse important technological applications due to their unprecedented physicochemical characteristics such as intense light-matter interactions, enhanced circular dichroism, and strong circularly polarized luminescence. Herein, we provide a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art advances in liquid crystal-templated chiral nanomaterials. The chiroptical properties of chiral nanomaterials are touched, and their fundamental design principles and bottom-up synthesis strategies are discussed. Different chiral functional nanomaterials based on liquid-crystalline soft templates, including chiral plasmonic nanomaterials and chiral luminescent nanomaterials, are systematically introduced, and their underlying mechanisms, properties, and potential applications are emphasized. This review concludes with a perspective on the emerging applications, challenges, and future opportunities of such fascinating chiral nanomaterials. This review can not only deepen our understanding of the fundamentals of soft-matter chirality, but also shine light on the development of advanced chiral functional nanomaterials toward their versatile applications in optics, biology, catalysis, electronics, and beyond.

Optically Active Perovskite CsPbBr3 Nanocrystals Helically Arranged on Inorganic Silica Nanohelices.

CdSe nanocrystals (NCs) were grafted on chiral silica nanoribbons, and the mechanism of resulting chirality induction was investigated. Because of their chiral organization, these NCs show optically active properties that depend strongly on their grafting densities and sizes of the NCs. The effect of the morphology of the chiral silica templates between helical (cylindrical curvature) vs twisted (saddle like curvature) ribbons was investigated. The g-factor of NCs-silica helical ribbons is larger than that of the NCs-silica twisted ribbons. Finally, rod-like NCs (QR) with different lengths were grafted on the twisted silica ribbons. Interestingly, their grafting direction with respect to the helix surface changed from side-grafting for short QR to tip-grafting for long rods and the corresponding CD spectra switched signs.
