William A. Hawley,Penelope A. Phillips-Howard,Feiko O. ter Kuile,Dianne J. Terlouw,John M. Vulule,Maurice Ombok,Bernard L. Nahlen,John E. Gimnig,Simon Kariuki,Margarette S. Kolczak,Allen W. Hightower +10 more
TL;DR: In areas with intense malaria transmission with high ITN coverage, the primary effect of insecticide-treated nets is via area-wide effects on the mosquito population and not, as commonly supposed, by simple imposition of a physical barrier protecting individuals from biting.
Journal ArticleDOI
The epidemiology of drug-resistant malaria.
TL;DR: This article will focus on resistance occurring in chemotherapy rather than prophylaxis, and host factors, including pharmacokinetics and immunity, will not be reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI
Efficacy of permethrin-treated bed nets in the prevention of mortality in young children in an area of high perennial malaria transmission in western Kenya.
Penelope A. Phillips-Howard,Bernard L. Nahlen,Margarette S. Kolczak,Allen W. Hightower,Feiko O. ter Kuile,Jane Alaii,John E. Gimnig,John Arudo,John M. Vulule,Amos Odhacha,S. Patrick Kachur,Erik Schoute,Daniel H. Rosen,John D. Sexton,Aggrey J. Oloo,William A. Hawley +15 more
TL;DR: A group-randomized controlled trial of insecticide (permethrin)-treated bed nets (ITNs) was conducted in an area of high perennial malaria transmission in western Kenya to test the effect of ITNs on all-cause mortality in children 1-59 months of age as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI

Robert Steffen,E Fuchs,J Schildknecht,U. Naef,Maia Funk,Patricia Schlagenhauf,Penelope A. Phillips-Howard,C Nevill,D Stürchler +8 more
TL;DR: Mefloquine is significantly more effective than chloroquine plus proguanil for malaria prophylaxis in short-term tourists visiting East Africa and has a tolerance similar to that of chloroquines used alone.
Journal ArticleDOI
