This paper presents control and coordination algorithms for groups of vehicles. The focus is on autonomous vehicle networks performing distributed sensing tasks where each vehicle plays the role of a mobile tunable sensor. The paper proposes gradient descent algorithms for a class of utility functions which encode optimal coverage and sensing policies. The resulting closed-loop behavior is adaptive, distributed, asynchronous, and verifiably correct.

Accurate and high throughput cell sorting is a critical enabling technology in molecular and cellular biology, biotechnology, and medicine While conventional methods can provide high efficiency sorting in short timescales, advances in microfluidics have enabled the realization of miniaturized devices offering similar capabilities that exploit a variety of physical principles We classify these technologies as either active or passive Active systems generally use external fields (eg, acoustic, electric, magnetic, and optical) to impose forces to displace cells for sorting, whereas passive systems use inertial forces, filters, and adhesion mechanisms to purify cell populations Cell sorting on microchips provides numerous advantages over conventional methods by reducing the size of necessary equipment, eliminating potentially biohazardous aerosols, and simplifying the complex protocols commonly associated with cell sorting Additionally, microchip devices are well suited for parallelization, enabling complete lab-on-a-chip devices for cellular isolation, analysis, and experimental processing In this review, we examine the breadth of microfluidic cell sorting technologies, while focusing on those that offer the greatest potential for translation into clinical and industrial practice and that offer multiple, useful functions We organize these sorting technologies by the type of cell preparation required (ie, fluorescent label-based sorting, bead-based sorting, and label-free sorting) as well as by the physical principles underlying each sorting mechanism

Microfluidic cell sorting: a review of the advances in the separation of cells from debulking to rare cell isolation

The problem of improving the contour error in twodimensional CNC machines is considered in this paper. The nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous inputs (NARX) network is a dynamic neural architecture commonly used for input-output modeling of nonlinear dynamic systems. In the work presented here, two sets of off-line trained NARX networks are used to predict the position outputs at the next sampling time instant for the two axes of a CNC machine. From these values, the expected axial components of the contour error for the next instant is computed and used to adjust the reference position inputs to compensate for this error. The inputs to the NARX networks are the original uncompensated reference position inputs and actual axial positions together with corresponding values in past instances, the number of these latter depending upon the complexity of the dynamics of the system. An iterative procedure is used to improve compensation performance. Simulation results using linear, circular and parabolic contours show that this approach can significantly improve contouring accuracy. Although modelbased in its control strategy, this approach does not require an accurate knowledge of the system’s dynamic model as the NARX networks are trained using actual input-output data which can be readily obtained from the system during operation.

Optimization of a Fluid Distribution Manifold: Mechanical Design, Numerical Studies, Fabrication, and Experimental Verification

This paper describes the development of an explicit force control system for exerting a suitable force on the zebrafish chorion while simultaneously measuring its impedance, and presents results demonstrating that the application of an external force leads to significant change in the impedance of a zebrafish embryo. These results offer support for a plausible explanation that activities of pore canals in the chorion are responsible for the observed change in impedance.

Enhancement of thermal transport performance in microscale spiral-channel cooling cores

This paper presents a discrete-event approach to synthesis of transcription control for a class of (computational) gene networks. Given a set of genes and protein-gene and/or protein-protein interaction patterns, this approach can be used to synthesis a transcription control induced by these interaction patterns, and as a consequence, determine the behavior of the gene network. This proposed approach is demonstrated in the synthesis of a transcription control that produces the observed (logical) behavior in the induction of a phage lambda lysogen.
