Determination of the maximum temperature and temperature distribution along the rake face of the cutting tool is of particular importance because of its controlling influence on tool life, as well as, the quality of the machined part. Numerous attempts have been made to approach the problem with different methods including experimental, analytical and numerical analysis. Although considerable research effort has been made on the thermal problem in metal cutting, there is hardly a consensus on the basics principles. The unique tribological contact phenomenon, which occur in metal cutting is highly localized and non-linear, and occurs at high temperatures, high pressures and high strains. This has made it extremely difficult to predict in a precise manner or even assess the performance of various models developed for modelling the machining process. Accurate and repeatable heat and temperature prediction remains challenging due to the complexity of the contact phenomena in the cutting process. In this paper, previous research on heat generation and heat dissipation in the orthogonal machining process is critically reviewed. In addition, temperature measurement techniques applied in metal cutting are briefly reviewed. The emphasis is on the comparability of test results, as well as, the relevance of temperature measurement method to high speed cutting. New temperature measurement results obtained by a thermal imaging camera in high speed cutting of high strength alloys are also presented. Finally, the latest work on estimation of heat generation, heat partition and temperature distribution in metal machining is reviewed. This includes an exploration of the different simplifying assumptions related to the geometry of the process components, material properties, boundary conditions and heat partition. The paper then proposes some modelling requirements for computer simulation of high speed machining processes.

Heat generation and temperature prediction in metal cutting: A review and implications for high speed machining

This review article is concerned with the mathematical modelling of the mechanical properties of the soft biological tissues that constitute the walls of arteries. Many important aspects of the mechanical behaviour of arterial tissue can be treated on the basis of elasticity theory, and the focus of the article is therefore on the constitutive modelling of the anisotropic and highly nonlinear elastic properties of the artery wall. The discussion focuses primarily on developments over the last decade based on the theory of deformation invariants, in particular invariants that in part capture structural aspects of the tissue, specifically the orientation of collagen fibres, the dispersion in the orientation, and the associated anisotropy of the material properties. The main features of the relevant theory are summarized briefly and particular forms of the elastic strain-energy function are discussed and then applied to an artery considered as a thick-walled circular cylindrical tube in order to illustrate its extension–inflation behaviour. The wide range of applications of the constitutive modelling framework to artery walls in both health and disease and to the other fibrous soft tissues is discussed in detail. Since the main modelling effort in the literature has been on the passive response of arteries, this is also the concern of the major part of this article. A section is nevertheless devoted to reviewing the limited literature within the continuum mechanics framework on the active response of artery walls, i.e. the mechanical behaviour associated with the activation of smooth muscle, a very important but also very challenging topic that requires substantial further development. A final section provides a brief summary of the current state of arterial wall mechanical modelling and points to key areas that need further modelling effort in order to improve understanding of the biomechanics and mechanobiology of arteries and other soft tissues, from the molecular, to the cellular, tissue and organ levels.

Fracture prediction in plastic deformation processes

A general expression has been derived using anisotropic elasticity theory for the lattice strain which corresponds to the x‐ray diffraction measurement on the polycrystalline specimen (cubic system) compressed nonhydrostatically in an opposed anvil device. The expressions for the various diffraction geometries emerge as the special cases of this equation. The strain calculated using isotropic elasticity theory corresponds to the macroscopic strain in the specimen, and can be obtained from the present equation by letting the anisotropy factor 2(S11−S12)/S44=1. Further, it is shown that the ratio of the lattice strain to the macroscopic strain (in the direction of the lattice strain) produced by the deviatoric stress component depends on the Miller indices (hkl) of the lattice planes and the elastic anisotropy factor. This ratio is unity only if the crystallites constituting the specimen are elastically isotropic, and increases with increasing anisotropy of the crystallites.

Numerical simulation of the forging process

Single point incremental forming (SPIF) is a process with the capability to form complex geometries using a tool of very simple geometry, without the need for a matching die. However, large elastic springback resulting from the die-less nature of the process can cause problems if high levels of accuracy are required. The aim of this investigation is to use numerical modelling to investigate different strategies to improve the process precision. A finite-element (FE) model has been used to investigate the effects of adding a backing plate, a supporting kinematic tool and modifying the final stage of the tool path. The results show that the backing plate will minimise the sheet bending near to the initial tool contact location; the additional kinematic tool will reduce springback; and the extension of the tool path across the base of the sheet will eliminate the pillow effect. The cumulative effect of introducing these features to the process shows an improvement in the overall accuracy of the profile and in the thickness distributions of the final product. The results contribute to a better understanding of springback in SPIF.
