Journal ArticleDOI
Endothelial cell infection and endotheliitis in COVID-19.
Zsuzsanna Varga,Andreas J. Flammer,Peter Steiger,Martina Haberecker,Rea Andermatt,Annelies S. Zinkernagel,Mandeep R. Mehra,Reto A. Schuepbach,Frank Ruschitzka,Holger Moch +9 more
TL;DR: The vascular endothelium is an active paracrine, endocrine, and Endothelial cell infection and endotheliitis in COVID-19 and recruitment of immune cells can result in widespread endothelial dysfunction associated with apoptosis.
Journal ArticleDOI
Intracerebral endotheliitis and microbleeds are neuropathological features of COVID-19.
Daniel Kirschenbaum,Lukas L. Imbach,Elisabeth J. Rushing,Katrin Frauenknecht,R T Dominic Gascho,Benjamin V. Ineichen,Emanuela Keller,Sibylle Kohler,Mona Lichtblau,Regina Reimann,Katharina Schreib,Silvia Ulrich,Peter Steiger,Adriano Aguzzi,Karl Frontzek +14 more
TL;DR: Cerebral microhemorrhages in COVID‐19 patients could be a consequence of Sars‐ CoV‐2‐induced endotheliitis and more general vasculopathic changes and may correlate with an increased risk of vascular encephalopathy.
Journal ArticleDOI
Large and Small Cerebral Vessel Involvement in Severe COVID-19: Detailed Clinical Workup of a Case Series.
Emanuela Keller,Giovanna Brandi,Sebastian Winklhofer,Lukas L. Imbach,Daniel Kirschenbaum,Karl Frontzek,Peter Steiger,Sabeth Aurelia Dietler,Marcellina Isabelle Haeberlin,Jan Willms,Francesca Porta,Adrian Waeckerlin,Michael Huber,Irene A Abela,Andreas Lutterotti,Christoph Stippich,Christoph Globas,Zsuzsanna Varga,Ilijas Jelcic +18 more
TL;DR: Different mechanisms of cerebrovascular disorders might be involved in COVID-19, which may lead to long-term disabilities and mechanisms should be urgently investigated to develop neuroprotective strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inflammatory olfactory neuropathy in two patients with COVID-19.
Daniel Kirschenbaum,Lukas L. Imbach,Silvia Ulrich,Elisabeth J. Rushing,Emanuela Keller,Regina Reimann,Katrin Frauenknecht,Mona Lichtblau,Martin Witt,Thomas Hummel,Peter Steiger,Adriano Aguzzi,Karl Frontzek +12 more
TL;DR: Effects of tranexamic acid on death, vascular occlusive events, and blood transfusion in trauma patients with significant haemorrhage in CRASH2: a randomised, placebocontrolled trial.
Journal ArticleDOI
Differential temporal profile of lowered blood glucose levels (3.5 to 6.5 mmol/l versus 5 to 8 mmol/l) in patients with severe traumatic brain injury.
Regula Meier,Markus Béchir,Silke Ludwig,Jutta Sommerfeld,Marius Keel,Peter Steiger,Reto Stocker,John F. Stover +7 more
TL;DR: Maintaining blood glucose within 5 to 8 mmol/l appears to yield greater benefit during the first week, but whether patients might profit from temporally adapted blood glucose limits, inducing lower values during the second week, and whether concomitant glucose infusion to prevent hypoglycaemia is safe in patients with post-traumatic oedema is safe.
