The World Health Organization defines domestic violence as the deliberate use of force, power, threats, against a person or group of people, which may result in death or physical injury. As such, it usually results in physical, economic, psychological, sexual or emotional harm. This study assessed the prevalence and contributing factors of domestic violence among women and children in South Africa to better understand the factors surrounding domestic violence using the 2016 Demographic and Health Survey. Because domestic violence is a public health issue, nurses play a central role in prevention and post-trauma care, including within emergency and psychiatric services.

Abstract Domestic violence against women is a serious social problem that requires male’s perspective understanding to be prevented. This study aimed to understand the perceptions of adult men, with higher education degree or higher education students, on this type of violence. Using Bandura’s social learning theory, a qualitative study was developed with 13 men. The data were collected using remote semi-structured interviews. The analytical process used thematic analysis presuppositions. It was found that men do not agree with sexist ideals that can increase the rates of violence against women. However, participants oscillate between understanding women as victim and as guilty. The data may be a reflection of the current greater debate on issues related to gender equality. We conclude that it is important to invest in the multidimensional training of men to break with hegemonic masculinity, which can foster the struggle against gender-based violence.

Men’s Perceptions of Domestic Violence Against Women: A Qualitative Study

Students in Africa and worldwide should learn about Ubuntu at the school, secondary school, college, and university levels. It should be incorporated into the educational process. Tobacco-free days, alcohol-free (dry days), and drug-free days could all be ways to commemorate Ubuntu. Female smokers are at a higher risk than male smokers. Following such measures may aid in raising awareness. Legislators in Africa need to employ incentives to amend legislation to fully integrate Ubuntu into society. It is possible to prevent violence against women and children by instilling Ubuntu principles in the community and society. It is sufficient to refer to the existing Ubuntu documentation to design and validate the necessary training programme. Still, in the case of Ubuntu, more experimental research should be encouraged. Such research must be funded by both the government and the private sector. Even though Ubuntu started in Africa, it can be globalized. Nevertheless, Ubuntu has not been adopted to its full potential in the current situation. The Zulu people of South Africa is well-known for its kindness and hospitality, and it is to them that we owe the concept of Ubuntu. According to Ubuntu, we are people not because of who we are but because of how we connect with other people. This implies that relationships are essential. With over three thousand diverse African tribes, diversity management is critical, and Ubuntu can be a driving force in bringing all the diversity under one umbrella. There are cultural mechanisms in all African traditions and events that exist “to unite”, but this aspect of unity is within the community, and Ubuntu can be implemented to lead the same element of harmony with various communities. There are ways to integrate Ubuntu as a cultural event into the calendar, bringing together diverse African communities as one force, culture, nation, and identity. Regardless of the level of diversity, the most important thing is to include everyone and give them the recognition they deserve.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines domestic violence as the deliberate use of force, power and threats against a person or group of people to bring about death or physical injury. This abusive behavior is used to gain or maintain control over the other intimate partner or family member. It usually results in physical, psychological, emotional sexual or economic harm. Most perpetrators are spouses and close family members. It cuts across different spheres of the society and can occur in couples; heterosexual, or homosexual and also between parents and children (child abuse). Research reported that out of 1394 men that partook in the 2016 representative sample of the South African Demographic and Health Survey, 50% of them were perpetrators of domestic violence in their own homes. Sadly, domestic violence has caused a lot of havoc in several families and life of individuals, these range from psychological trauma, anxiety, use of drugs, alcohol and other harmful substances, physical pain, emotional trauma, homelessness, economic crisis, to low self-esteem and death amongst other effects. The aim of our research is to understand the contributing factors of domestic violence in South Africa and to also add to the growing body of knowledge of domestic violence in the country and the region. Deducing from this conclusion, we can recommend that government should focus more on girl child education till tertiary level and women empowerment in terms of job creation to help reduce the occurrence of domestic violence in our society. Population scientists Tomiwa Fapohunda and Phathutshedzo Masiagwala and Professor demographer Nancy Stiegler from the University of Western Cape discuss in this interview the prevalence, population group, age, occupation, marital status, education attainment of the victims of domestic violence, with a view to establish factors that causes domestic violence in South-Africa.
