TL;DR: Using a two-dimensional finite element model with an elasto-plastic behavior, this article showed that the opening of the Okinawa basin behind the Ryukyu trench since about 6 Ma can be explained by a retreating trench model with lateral anchoring due to the collision in Taiwan.
