Multicomponent reactions have become increasingly popular as tools for the rapid generation of small-molecule libraries. However, to ensure sufficient molecular diversity and complexity, there is a continuous need for novel reactions. Although serendipity has always played an important role in the discovery of novel (multicomponent) reactions, rational design strategies have become much more important over the past decade. In this Review, we present an overview of general strategies that allow the design of novel multicomponent reactions. The challenges and opportunities for the future will be discussed.

Multicomponent Reaction Design in the Quest for Molecular Complexity and Diversity

Development of renewable energy technologies has been a significant area of research amongst scientists with the aim of attaining a sustainable world society Solar thermal fuels that can capture, convert, store, and release solar energy in the form of heat through reversible photoisomerization of molecular photoswitches such as azobenzene derivatives are currently in the limelight of research Herein, we provide a state-of-the-art account on the recent advancements in solar thermal fuels based on azobenzene photoswitches We begin with an overview on the importance of azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels and their fundamentals Then, we highlight the recent advances in diverse azobenzene materials for solar thermal fuels such as pure azobenzene derivatives, nanocarbon-templated azobenzene, and polymer-templated azobenzene The basic design concepts of these advanced solar energy storage materials are discussed, and their promising applications are highlighted We then introduce the recent endeavors in the molecular design of azobenzene derivatives toward efficient solar thermal fuels, and conclude with new perspectives on the future scope, opportunities and challenges It is expected that continuous pioneering research involving scientists and engineers from diverse technological backgrounds could trigger the rapid advancement of this important interdisciplinary field, which embraces chemistry, physics, engineering, nanoscience, nanotechnology, materials science, polymer science, etc

Azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels: design, properties, and applications

Isoxazoles are important five-membered aromatic heterocycles in organic chemistry. Recently, many exciting advances in the synthesis and functionalization of isoxazoles have been reported. New transition metal-catalyzed reactions have resulted in the development of attractive and highly efficient synthetic approaches to densely functionalized isoxazoles. Complete control of regioselectivity can be achieved on the basis of a judicious choice of metal catalyst and reaction partners using dipolar cycloaddition and cycloisomerization reactions, while more recent studies have focused on the site-selective functionalization of isoxazoles via CH functionalization. New strategies for the use of isoxazoles as scaffolding templates in asymmetric synthesis have emerged, thus opening new prospects for the synthesis of enantioenriched motifs under the conditions that are orthogonal to other transformations. In this review, recent advances involving the synthesis and reactivity of isoxazoles are summarized. The review covers the period from January 2005 to June 2015.
