Journal ArticleDOI

The nerve-growth factor.

TL;DR: Nerve growth factor is a signaling protein and growth factor implicated in a wide range of development and maintenance functions and has been implicated in immune function, stress response, nerve maintenance, and in neurodegenerative diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Induction of apoptosis in cerebellar granule neurons by low potassium: inhibition of death by insulin-like growth factor I and cAMP.

TL;DR: The results offer the prospect of an excellent model system to study the mechanisms underlying apoptosis in the central nervous system and the suppression of this process by survival factors such as insulin-like growth factor I.
Journal ArticleDOI

Glutamate neurotoxicity, oxidative stress and mitochondria.

TL;DR: How ROS are generated and how they affect mitochondrial function in GNT are reported and the relationship between ROS generation and cytochrome c release is described in detail, with the released cy tochrome c playing a role in the cell defense mechanism against neurotoxicity.
Journal ArticleDOI

NMDA receptor mediates tau-induced neurotoxicity by calpain and ERK/MAPK activation

TL;DR: It is shown that overexpression of human tau and of some of its N-terminal fragments in primary neuronal cultures leads to an N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR)-mediated and caspase-independent cell death, which unravels a cellular mechanism linking tau toxicity to NMDAR activation and might be relevant to Alzheimer's disease and tauopathies where N MDAR-mediated toxicity is postulated to play a pivotal role.
