Risk factors for Buruli ulcer disease (Mycobacterium ulcerans infection): Results from a case-control study in Ghana
Pratima L Raghunathan,Ellen A. Spotts Whitney,Kwame Asamoa,Ymkje Stienstra,Thomas H. Taylor,George K Amofah,David Ofori-Adjei,Karen M. Dobos,Jeannette Guarner,Stacey Martin,Sonal Pathak,Erasmus Klutse,Samuel Etuaful,Winette T. A. van der Graaf,Tjip S. van der Werf,C. H. King,Jordan W. Tappero,David A. Ashford +17 more
TL;DR: BUD is an environmentally acquired infection strongly associated with exposure to river areas and exposed skin may facilitate transmission, and control strategies in BUD-endemic areas could include covering exposed skin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Histopathologic features of Mycobacterium ulcerans infection.
Jeannette Guarner,Jeanine Bartlett,Ellen A. Spotts Whitney,Pratima L Raghunathan,Ymkje Stienstra,Kwame Asamoa,Samuel Etuaful,Erasmus Klutse,Eric Quarshie,Tjip S. van der Werf,Winette T. A. van der Graaf,C. Harold King,David A. Ashford +12 more
TL;DR: A study of risk factors for the Buruli ulcer disease in Ghana, adequate excisional skin-biopsy specimens were obtained from 124 clinically suspicious lesions as mentioned in this paper, since acid-fast bacilli (AFB) were found by histopathologic examination.
Journal ArticleDOI
Identification of Haemophilus influenzae serotypes by standard slide agglutination serotyping and PCR-based capsule typing.
Leslye LaClaire,Maria Lucia Tondella,David S. Beall,Corie A. Noble,Pratima L Raghunathan,Nancy E. Rosenstein,Tanja Popovic +6 more
TL;DR: An overall 94% agreement between SAST and PCR results showed that slide agglutination could be a valid and reliable method for serotyping H. influenzae if the test was performed correctly, in accordance with standardized and recommended procedures.
Journal ArticleDOI
Susceptibility to Buruli ulcer is associated with the SLC11A1 (NRAMP1) D543N polymorphism
Ymkje Stienstra,T S van der Werf,Elvira Oosterom,Ilja M. Nolte,W.T.A. van der Graaf,Samuel Etuaful,Pratima L Raghunathan,Ellen A. Spotts Whitney,Edwin Ampadu,Kwame Asamoa,Erasmus Klutse,te Gerhardus Meerman,Jordan W. Tappero,David A. Ashford,G. van der Steege +14 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that a genetic polymorphism in the SLC11A1 gene plays a role in susceptibility to develop Buruli ulcer, with an estimated 13% population attributable risk.
