This book provides the most basic problems, concepts, and well-established results from the topological structure and analysis of interconnection networks in the graph-theoretic language. It covers the basic principles and methods of network design, several well-known networks such as hypercubes, de Bruijn digraphs, Kautz digraphs, double loop, and other networks, and the newest parameters to measure performance of fault-tolerant networks such as Menger number, Rabin number, fault-tolerant diameter, wide-diameter, restricted connectivity, and (l,w)-dominating number. Audience: The book is suitable for those readers who are working on or intend to start research in design analysis of the topological structure of interconnection networks, particularly undergraduates and postgraduates specializing in computer science and applied mathematics.

Topological Structure and Analysis of Interconnection Networks

Diagnosability has played an important role in the reliability of an interconnection network. The classical problem of fault diagnosis is discussed widely and the diagnosability of many well-known networks have been explored. We introduce a new measure of diagnosability, called conditional diagnosability, by restricting that any faulty set cannot contain all the neighbors of any vertex in the graph. Based on this requirement, the conditional diagnosability of the n-dimensional hypercube is shown to be 4(n - 2) +1, which is about four times as large as the classical diagnosability. Besides, we propose some useful conditions for verifying if a system is t-diagnosable and introduce a new concept, called a strongly t-diagnosable system, under the PMC model. Applying these concepts and conditions, we investigate some t-diagnosable networks which are also strongly t-diagnosable.

Conditional diagnosability measures for large multiprocessor systems

Due to recent developments of parallel and distributed computing, the design and analysis of various interconnection networks has been a main topic of research for the past few years and is still stimulated by the new technologies of communication networks such as optic fibers. There are many advantages in using Cayley (di)graphs as models for interconnection networks. This work first surveys some classes of Cayley graphs which are well studied as models of interconnection networks. Results and problems related to routings in networks are then presented, with emphasis on loads of nodes and links in routings.

The g-good-neighbor conditional diagnosability of hypercube under PMC model

Diagnosability of a multiprocessor system is one important study topic in the parallel processing area. As a hypercube variant, the crossed cube has many attractive properties. The diameter, wide diameter and fault diameter of it are all approximately half of those of the hypercube. The power that the crossed cube simulates trees and cycles is stronger than the hypercube. Because of these advantages of the crossed cube, it has attracted much attention from researchers. We show that the n-dimensional crossed cube is n-diagnosable under a major diagnosis model-the comparison diagnosis model proposed by Malek (1980) and Maeng and Malek (1981) if n/spl ges/4. According to this, the polynomial algorithm presented by Sengupta and Dahbura (1992) may be used to diagnose the n-dimensional crossed cube, provided that the number of the faulty nodes in the n-dimensional crossed cube does not exceed n. The conclusion of this paper also indicates that the diagnosability of the n-dimensional crossed cube is the same as that of the n-dimensional hypercube when n>5 and better than that of the n-dimensional hypercube when n=4.

Diagnosability of crossed cubes under the comparison diagnosis model

The recently introduced interconnection network, crossed cube, has attracted much attention in the parallel processing area due to its many attractive features. Like the ordinary hypercube, the n-dimensional crossed cube is a regular graph with 2/sup n/ vertices and n2/sup n-1/ edges. The diameter of the crossed cube is approximately half that of the ordinary hypercube. These advantages of the crossed cube motivated the study of how well it can simulate other networks such as the complete binary tree. We develop a formal and systematic methodology for designing an optimal multiple bus system (MBS) realizing a set of interconnection functions whose graphical representation (denoted as IFG) is symmetric. The problem of constructing an optimal MBS for a given IFG is NP-hard. In this paper, we show that polynomial time solutions exist when the IFG is vertex symmetric. This is the case of interest for the vast majority of important interconnection function sets. We present a particular partition (which can be found in polynomial time) on the edge set of a vertex symmetric IFG, that produces a symmetric MBS with minimum number of buses as well as minimum number of interfaces. We demonstrate several advantages of such an MBS over a direct-link architecture realizing the same IFG, in terms of the number of ports per processor, number of neighbors per processors, and the diameter.
