Since the events of September 11th, increased attention has been given to the effects of blast loading on structures. Bridges are especially important due to their potentially critical role in the economy and for emergency response. Prestressed concrete highway bridges are very common, representing 11 percent of state bridges nationwide. Yet, very little is known about how prestressed concrete bridges respond to blast loading.

When the effect of combined blast induced shock wave and fragment penetration impact load is sufficiently large enough to induce severe damage in structures compared to individual actions of only-blast and only-impact load, this scenario is called synergetic effect of simultaneous actions. The combined nature of those dual actions aggravates damage and collapses of structures. This paper presented the state-of-the-art review on effect of different parameters, dynamic responses, failure types, and damage mitigation techniques for structures prone to combined actions of blast induced shock wave and fragment impact loads based on findings of experimental, numerical, and analytical research works conducted in previous literature.

Structures under Synergetic Effects of Combined Blast and Impact Loads: A State-of-the-Art Review

The outer tank of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage tank is a longitudinally and meridionally pre-stressed concrete (PSC) wall structure. Because of the current trend of constructing larger LNG storage tanks, the pre-stressing forces required to increase wall strength must be significantly increased. Because of the increase in tank sizes and pre-stressing forces, an extreme loading scenario such as a bomb blast or an airplane crash needs to be investigated. Therefore, in this study, the blast resistance performance of LNG storage tanks was analyzed by conducting a blast simulation to investigate the safety of larger LNG storage tanks. Test data validation for a blast simulation of reinforced concrete panels was performed using a specific FEM code, LS-DYNA, prior to a full-scale blast simulation of the outer tank of a 270,000-kL LNG storage tank. Another objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and serviceability of an LNG storage tank with respect to varying amounts of explosive charge. The results of this study can be used as basic data for the design and safety evaluation of PSC LNG storage tanks.

Analytical Assessment of Blast Damage of 270,000-kL LNG Storage Outer Tank According to Explosive Charges

The behavior and response of structural reinforced concrete elements under severe blast loads are investigated numerically. The analytical approach utilizes the Timoshenko beam theory for the analysis of reinforced concrete beams. A formally proposed rate-sensitive nonlinear material models are used to predict the dynamic property of structural steel and concrete under the blast loads. Comparison between the rate-sensitive analysis and rate-in sensitive analysis in which the static strength of material is enhanced by a factor to roughly reflect the effect of strain-rate is given. The numerical results are also compared with the limited experimental data. It is demonstrated that the present consideration of the influence of strain-rate on the structural responses in design manuals leads to over conservative.
