The exchange of electric charges between a chemical reaction centre and an external electrical circuit is critical for many real-life technologies. This perspective explores the “wiring” of highly redox-active molecular metal oxide anions, so-called polyoxometalates (POMs) to conductive organic polymers (CPs). The major synthetic approaches to these organic–inorganic hybrid materials are reviewed. Typical applications are highlighted, emphasizing the current bottlenecks in materials development. Utilization of the composites in the fields of energy conversion, electrochemical energy storage, sensors and nanoparticle “wiring” into conductive materials are discussed. The outlook section presents the authors’ views on emerging fields of research where the combination of POMs and CPs can be expected to provide novel materials for groundbreaking new technologies. These include light-weight energy storage, high-sensitivity toxin sensors, artificial muscles, photoelectrochemical devices and components for fuel cells.

Because of current fabrication limitations, miniaturizing nonvolatile memory devices for managing the explosive increase in big data is challenging. Molecular memories constitute a promising candidate for next-generation memories because their properties can be readily modulated through chemical synthesis. Moreover, these memories can be fabricated through mild solution processing, which can be easily scaled up. Among the various materials, polyoxometalate (POM) molecules have attracted considerable attention for use as novel data-storage nodes for nonvolatile memories. Here, an overview of recent advances in the development of POMs for nonvolatile memories is presented. The general background knowledge of the structure and property diversity of POMs is also summarized. Finally, the challenges and perspectives in the application of POMs in memories are discussed.

Evolutionary Metal Oxide Clusters for Novel Applications: Toward High-Density Data Storage in Nonvolatile Memories

The present study is aimed at investigating the solid state reduction of a representative series of Keggin and Dawson polyoxometalate (POM) films in contact with a metallic (aluminum) electrode and at introducing them as highly efficient cathode interlayers in organic optoelectronics. We show that, upon reduction, up to four electrons are transferred from the metallic electrode to the POM clusters of the Keggin series dependent on addenda substitution, whereas a six electron reduction was observed in the case of the Dawson type clusters. The high degree of their reduction by Al was found to be of vital importance in obtaining effective electron transport through the cathode interface. A large improvement in the operational characteristics of organic light emitting devices and organic photovoltaics based on a wide range of different organic semiconducting materials and incorporating reduced POM/Al cathode interfaces was achieved as a result of the large decrease of the electron injection/extraction barrier...

Old metal oxide clusters in new applications: spontaneous reduction of Keggin and Dawson polyoxometalate layers by a metallic electrode for improving efficiency in organic optoelectronics.

In this article the Wells–Dawson polyoxometalate K6[P2W18O62] is grown as an interfacial layer between indium tin oxide and bulk heterojunction of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM). The structure of the POM layers depends on the thickness and shows a highly anisotropic surface organization. The films have been characterized by atomic force microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to gain insight into their macroscopic organization and better understand their electronic properties. Then, they were put at the anodic interface of a P3HT : PCBM organic solar cell and characterized on an optical bench. The photovoltaic efficiency is discussed in terms of the benefit of the polyoxometalate at the anodic interface of an organic photovoltaic cell.
