SummaryResults are presented of an investigation into the capacity of the indoor potted-plant/growth medium microcosm to remove air-borne volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which contaminate the indoor environment, using three plant species, Howea forsteriana (Becc. (Kentia palm), Spathiphyllum wallisii Schott. ‘Petite’ (Peace Lily) and Dracaena deremensis Engl. ‘Janet Craig’. The selected VOCs were benzene and n-hexane, both common contaminants of indoor air. The findings provide the first comprehensive demonstration of the ability of the potted-plant system to act as an integrated biofilter in removing these contaminants. Under the test conditions used, it was found that the microorganisms of the growth medium were the “rapid-response” agents of VOC removal, the role of the plants apparently being mainly in sustaining the root microorganisms. Potted-plant/growth media interactions and capacities for removal of volatiles from indoor air

Soil biofilters and related systems based onthe use of natural filter beds have been usedfor several years for solving specific airpollution problems. Over the past decade,significant improvements have been brought tothese original bioprocesses, among which thedevelopment and use of new inert packingmaterials. The present paper overviews the mostcommon inert packings used in biofiltration ofwaste gases and their major characteristics. Apotential problem recently encountered whenusing inert filter beds is the heterogenousdistribution of biomass on the packingmaterial, and the excessive growth andaccumulation of biomass when treating highorganic loads, eventually leading to cloggingof the biofilter and reduced efficiency.Several strategies that have been proposed forsolving such problems are described in thispaper. Technologies for controlling excessbiomass accumulation can be grouped into fourcategories based on the use of mechanicalforces, the use of specific chemicals, thereduction of microbial growth, and predation.

Inert filter media for the biofiltration of waste gases – characteristics and biomass control

Laboratory-scale experiments with a powdered compost biofilter treating benzene-polluted air

Both short-term and long-term biofiltration experiments were undertaken with a biofilter inoculated with a defined microbial consortium and treating an alkylbenzene mixture. The results obtained with such a biofilter in short-term experiments were very similar to those obtained with a biofilter inoculated with a non-defined mixed culture, in terms of maximum elimination capacities (70–72 g m–3 h–1) and the corresponding removal efficiencies (>95%). However, in long-term experiments, a better performance was reached, with a maximum elimination capacity of 120 g m–3 h–1, corresponding to a removal efficiency >99% after 2 years of operation. Inoculation proved to be useful for shortening the start-up period. In the long term, it appeared that biomass distribution was not homogenous along the biofilter, which in some cases resulted in a bad fit between simple model equations and experimental data.

Parameters affecting performance and modeling of biofilters treating alkylbenzene-polluted air.

Three identical upflow laboratory-scale biofilters, inoculated with thebenzene-degrading strain Pseudomonas sp. NCIMB 9688 but filled up with different packing media (PM), specifically raw sugarcane bagasse, sieved sugarcane bagasse and peat, were employed to eliminate benzene from waste air. Biofilters performances were evaluated by continuous runs in parallel at different influent benzene concentrations, sequentially stepped up through three different superficial gas velocities (31, 61, and 122 m h-1). The peat-packed biofilter exhibited the best performances over the whole experimentation, ensuring removal efficiency of 100% for influent benzeneconcentrations ≤0.05 g m-3, regardless of the superficial gas velocity, and up to 0.4 g m-3 at 31 m h-1. Maximum elimination capacities ofbiofilters packed with raw and sieved sugarcane bagasse and with peat were 3.2, 6.4 and 26 g mPM-3 h-1 at 6.1, 12 and 31 g mPM-3 h-1 loading rates, resulting in 52, 53 and 84% removals, respectively. The bacterial concentrationdistribution along the medium was shown to depend on the benzene loading rate and a correlation between specific benzene elimination rate and biomass concentration was established for biofilters packed with sieved sugarcane bagasse and peat. The macrokinetics of the process were also studied using the profiles of benzene and biomassconcentrations, collected under different conditions over the height of both biofilters, and a zeroth-order kinetic model was shown to describe successfully the degradation process.

Treatment of benzene-contaminated airstreams in laboratory-scale biofilters packed with raw and sieved sugarcane bagasse and with peat.

A novel trickling fibrous-bed bioreactor was developed for biofiltration to remove pollutants present in contaminated air. Air containing benzene as the sole carbon source was effectively treated with a coculture of Pseudomonas putida and Pseudomonas fluorescens immobilized in the trickling biofilter, which was wetted with a liquid medium containing only inorganic mineral salts. When the inlet benzene concentration (C gi ) was 0.37 g/m 3 , the benzene removal efficiency in the biofilter was greater than 90% at an empty bed retention time (EBRT) of 8 min or a superficial air flow rate of 1.8 m 3 /m 2 .h. In general, the removal efficiency decreased but the elimination capacity of the biofilter increased with increasing the inlet benzene concentration and the air (feed) flow rate. It was also found that the removal efficiency decreased but the elimination capacity increased with an increase in the loading capacity, which is equal to the inlet concentration divided by EBRT. The maximum elimination capacity achieved in this study was ∼11.5 g/m 3 .h when the inlet benzene concentration was 1.7 g/m 3 and the superficial air flow rate was 3.62 m 3 /m 2 .h. A simple mathematical model based on the first-order reaction kinetics was developed to simulate the biofiltration performance. The apparent first order parameter K 1 in this model was found to be linearly related to the inlet benzene concentration (K 1 =4.64-1.38 C gi ). The model can be used to predict the benzene removal efficiency and elimination capacity of the biofilter for benzene loading capacity up to ∼30 g/m 3 .h. Using this model, the maximum elimination capacity for the biofilter was estimated to be 12.3 g/m 3 .h, and the critical loading capacity was found to be 14 g/m 3 .h. The biofilter had a fast response to process condition changes and was stable for long-term operation; no degeneration or clogging of the biofilter was encountered during the 3-month period studied. The biofilter also had a relatively low pressure drop of 750 Pa/m at a high superficial air flow rate of 7.21 m 3 /m 2 .h, indicating a good potential for further scale up for industrial applications.
