Even though the list of references associated with this review is rather extensive, in no way does it exhaust the vast literature dedicated to the study of cavitation. The intent was to summarize (i) advances in analytical and numerical modelling, (ii) draw attention to the thermodynamic aspects of cavitation, and (iii) do so while reflecting on physical or experimental observations.

Cavitation formation and modelling for fluid film bearings: A review

The present study deals with the experimental determination of the performance of a 100 mm diameter plain journal bearing submitted to a misalignment torque. Hydrodynamic pressure and temperature fields in the mid-plane of the bearing, temperatures in two axial directions, oil flow rate, and minimum film thickness, were all measured for various operating conditions and misalignment torques. Tests were carried out for rotational speeds ranging from 1500 to 4000 rpm with a maximum static load of 9000 N and a misalignment torque varying from 0 to 70 N.m. The bearing performances were greatly affected by the misalignment. The maximum pressure in the mid-plane decreased by 20 percent for the largest misalignment torque while the minimum film thickness was reduced by 80 percent. The misalignment caused more significant changes in bearing performance when the rotational speed or load was low. The hydrodynamic effects were then relatively small and the bearing offered less resistance to the misalignment.

A Review of Thermal Effects in Hydrodynamic Bearings. Part II: Journal Bearings

The results of extensive amount of thermohydrodynamic simulations are presented in the form ofdesign charts for journal bearings. These charts enable one to evaluate the maximum temperature and an effective bearing temperature. Numerous examples are presented that show the applicability of these charts in predicting bearing performance parameters.

On the Generalization of Thermohydrodynamic Analyses for Journal Bearings

Thermohydrodynamic effects in journal bearings operating under steady-state loading are investigated. An analytical model for the finite journal bearings was formulated. The model includes correction factors for the cavitation effects and the mixing of the recirculating oil and supply oil at the inlet. A finite difference computer program was developed to numerically solve the Reynolds, energy, Laplace heat-conduction equations, and a viscosity-temperature relation simultaneously. The program includes a numerical solution technique for obtaining an isothermal shaft temperature and handles the mixing of the recirculating oil and supply oil. Good agreement with published experimental tests was obtained. It was also found that conservative solutions for the film temperature and load-carrying capacity can be obtained by imposing an adiabatic boundary condition on the bush inner surface.
