Interstellar hydrides -- that is, molecules containing a single heavy element atom with one or more hydrogen atoms -- were among the first molecules detected outside the solar system. They lie at the root of interstellar chemistry, being among the first species to form in initially-atomic gas, along with molecular hydrogen and its associated ions. Because the chemical pathways leading to the formation of interstellar hydrides are relatively simple, the analysis of the observed abundances is relatively straightforward and provides key information about the environments where hydrides are found. Recent years have seen rapid progress in our understanding of interstellar hydrides, thanks largely to far-IR and submillimeter observations performed with the Herschel Space Observatory. In this review, we will discuss observations of interstellar hydrides, along with the advanced modeling approaches that have been used to interpret them, and the unique information that has thereby been obtained.

Interstellar Hydrides

We present large-scale 9' × 27' (~25 pc × 70 pc) far-IR observations around Sgr B2 using the Long-Wavelength Spectrometer (LWS) on board the Infrared Space Observatory (ISO). The spectra are dominated by the strong continuum emission of dust, the widespread molecular absorption of light hydrides (OH, CH, and H2O), and the fine-structure lines of [N II], [N III], [O III], [C II], and [O I]. The widespread dust emission is reproduced by a cold component (Td 13-22 K) together with a warm component (Td 24-38 K), representing 10% of the dust opacity. The fine-structure line emission reveals a very extended component of ionized gas. The [O III] 52 μm/88 μm and [N III] 57 μm/[N II] 122 μm line intensity ratios show that the ionized gas has an average electron density of ~240 cm-3. The ionizing radiation can be characterized by a hard but diluted continuum, with effective temperatures of ~36,000 K and a Lyman continuum photon flux of ~1050.4 s-1. The spatial distribution of the ionizing sources with respect to the extended cloud and the clumpiness of the medium determine the large-scale effects of the radiation. Photodissociation regions (PDRs) can be numerous at the interface of the ionized and neutral gas. The analysis of the [C II] 158 μm and [O I] 63 and 145 μm lines indicates a far-UV radiation field of G0 103-104 and a density of nH = 103-104 cm-3 in these PDRs. The widespread OH lines are reproduced by nonlocal radiative transfer models for clouds of moderate volume density (n 103-104 cm-3) at Tk 40-100 K. PDR models can explain the enhanced column density of species such as H2O, OH, and O0. However, they fail to reproduce the observed NH3/NH2/NH 100/10/1 abundance ratios. For N-bearing species, it seems that shock chemistry has to be invoked. The molecular richness in the outer layers of Sgr B2 is probed by the ISO/LWS Fabry-Perot (~35 km s-1) detections toward Sgr B2(M), where more than 70 lines from 15 molecular and atomic species are observed at high signal-to-noise ratios.

The Far-Infrared Spectrum of the Sagittarius B2 Region: Extended Molecular Absorption, Photodissociation, and Photoionization

ISO/LWS grating observations of the ultraluminous infrared galaxy Arp 220 shows absorption in molecular lines of OH, H 2 0 , CH, NH, and "3, well as in the [0 I] 63 pm line and emission in the [C 111 158 pm line. We have modeled the continuum and the emission/absorption of all observed features by means of a non-local radiative transfer code. The continuum from 25 to 1300 pm is modeled AS A WARM (106 K) NUCLEAR REGION THAT IS OPTICALLY THICK IN THE FAR-INFRARED, attenuated by an extended region (size 2") that is heated mainly through absorption of nuclear infrared radiation. The molecular absorption in the nuclear region is characterized by high excitation due to the high infrared radiation density. The OH column densities are high toward the nucleus and the extended region (about 2 x 10 sup 17 cm sup-2). The H2O column density is also high toward the nucleus (2 - 10 x 1017 cm-2) and lower in the extended region. The column densities in a halo that accounts for the absorption by the lowest lying levels are similar to what are found in the diffuse clouds toward the star forming regions in the Sgr B2 molecular cloud complex near the Galactic Center. Most notable are the high column densities found for NH and NH3 toward the nucleus, with values of about 1.5 x 10supl6 cmsup-2 and about 3 x 10supl6 cmsup-2, respectively, whereas the NH2 column density is lower than about 2 x 10sup15 cmsup-2. A combination of PDRs in the extended region and hot cores with enhanced H20 photodissociation and a possible shock contribution in the nuclei may explain the relative column densities of OH and H20, whereas the nitrogen chemistry may be strongly affected by cosmic ray ionization. The [C II] 158 pm line is well reproduced by our models and its "deficit" relative to the CII/FIR ratio in normal and starburst galaxies is suggested to be mainly a consequence of the dominant non-PDR component of far- infrared radiation, ALTHOUGH OUR MODELS ALONE CANNOT RULE OUT EXTINCTION EFFECTS IN THE NUCLEI.

The Far-Infrared Spectrum of Arp 220

We report the detection of the ground state N, J = 1, 3/2 → 1, 1/2 doublet of the methylidyne radical CH at ∼532 GHz and ∼536 GHz with the Herschel/HIFI instrument along the sight-line to the massive star-forming regions G10.6–0.4 (W31C), W49N, and W51. While the molecular cores associated with these massive star-forming regions show emission lines, clouds in the diffuse interstellar medium are detected in absorption against the strong submillimeter background. The combination of hyperfine structure with emission and absorption results in complex profiles, with overlap of the different hyperfine components. The opacities of most of the CH absorption features are linearly correlated with those of CCH, CN, and HCO + in the same velocity intervals. In specific narrow velocity intervals, the opacities of CN and HCO + deviate from the mean trends, giving rise to more opaque absorption features. We propose that CCH can be used as another tracer of the molecular gas in the absence of better tracers, with [CCH]/[H2] ∼3.2 ± 1.1 × 10 −8 . The observed [CN]/[CH], [CCH]/[CH] abundance ratios suggest that the bulk of the diffuse matter along the lines of sight has gas densities nH = n(H) + 2n(H2) ranging between 100 and 1000 cm −3 .

The far-infrared spectrum of Arp 220

The first astronomical detection of CH in the far-infrared has been made. A ground state of rotational transition was observed in absorption against the far-infrared continuum peak of Sgr B2. The lines are resolved at a velocity resolution of 62 km/s, have a line width of roughly 250 km/s, and a line center optical depth of about 0.29. The inferred total column density of CH in the ground state along the line of sight is roughly 1.6 x 10 to the 15th/sq cm. Comparison of the far-infrared profiles to the 3 GHz emission lines confirms that the ground-state Lambda-doublet levels are inverted and gives an accurate estimate of the excitation temperature. The excitation temperature of the 3264 MHz line varies from cloud to cloud along the line of sight, the levels being most inverted in the Sgr B2 molecular cloud. The large intensity of the 3264 MHz line in this cloud relative to other clouds along the line of sight may thus be primarily an excitation effect.
