This article describes FSAN operator perspectives on the drivers and system requirements for fiber access beyond 10-Gigabit-class PON systems (i.e., NG-PON2 in FSAN terminology). Additionally, a review of potential solutions in scope for NG-PON2 is given in the context of these operator drivers and requirements.

Network operator requirements for the next generation of optical access networks

For many years, passive optical networks (PONs) have received a considerable amount of attraction regarding their potential for providing broadband connectivity to almost every citizen, especially in remote areas where fiber optics can attract people to populate regions that have been abandoned. Error-free connectivity without dropouts can offer new opportunities to communicate, earn money and enjoy cultural events. Transmission speeds are multigigabit with distances of a few tens of kilometers; these specifications were previously reserved for high-speed and long-haul backbone networks. PONs can also support a new class of applications, such as accurate time transfer or distributed fiber sensing and follow new trends in open networking. An outline of past and current standards and standards that have been proposed for the latest generation of multigigabit PONs is provided.

NGPON2 technology and standards

The additional subsystem PON2 enables independent high speed communication between a new type of optical network terminations (ONT2) with second downstream time division multiplex signals (D2j) and second upstream multiplex burst signals (U2j) via additional upstream and downstream channels.

Upgradeable passive optical network

Passive optical networks (PON) for fiber to the home/cabinet (FTTH/C) have become popular recently due the unstoppable bandwidth demand. Data rates downstream of up to 2.5 Gbps and upstream of up to 1.2 Gbps with splitting factors reaching 64 are in the focus of worldwide product developments. An attractive solution for next generation PON with splitting factors of more than 512, 10 Gbps downstream and 2.5 Gbps upstream data signals is outlined in this paper. The increased splitting factor compensates for the higher components costs due to the higher data rates. By adding optical amplifiers and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) distances over 100 km and ring structures with more than three nodes are possible leading to a promising and cost-effective next generation "super"-PON thus making MAN (metro access networks) obsolete.
