Understanding elementary excitations and their couplings in condensed matter systems is critical for developing better energy-conversion devices. In thermoelectric materials, the heat-to-electricity conversion efficiency is directly improved by suppressing the propagation of phonon quasiparticles responsible for macroscopic thermal transport. The current record material for thermoelectric conversion efficiency, SnSe, has an ultralow thermal conductivity, but the mechanism behind the strong phonon scattering remains largely unknown. From inelastic neutron scattering measurements and first-principles simulations, we mapped the four-dimensional phonon dispersion surfaces of SnSe, and found the origin of the ionic-potential anharmonicity responsible for the unique properties of SnSe. We show that the giant phonon scattering arises from an unstable electronic structure, with orbital interactions leading to a ferroelectric-like lattice instability. The present results provide a microscopic picture connecting electronic structure and phonon anharmonicity in SnSe, and offers new insights on how electron–phonon and phonon–phonon interactions may lead to the realization of ultralow thermal conductivity. Tin selenide is at present the best thermoelectric conversion material. Neutron scattering results and ab initio simulations show that the large phonon scattering is due to the development of a lattice instability driven by orbital interactions.

Orbitally driven giant phonon anharmonicity in SnSe

The Kitaev quantum spin liquid (KQSL) is an exotic emergent state of matter exhibiting Majorana fermion and gauge flux excitations. The magnetic insulator α-RuCl3 is thought to realize a proximate KQSL. We used neutron scattering on single crystals of α-RuCl3 to reconstruct dynamical correlations in energy-momentum space. We discovered highly unusual signals, including a column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center, which is very stable with temperature. This finding is consistent with scattering from the Majorana excitations of a KQSL. Other, more delicate experimental features can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. Our results encourage further study of this prototypical material and may open a window into investigating emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.

Neutron scattering in the proximate quantum spin liquid α-RuCl 3 .

Quantum matter provides an effective vacuum out of which arise emergent particles not corresponding to any experimentally detected elementary particle. Topological quantum materials in particular have become a focus of intense research in part because of the remarkable possibility to realize Majorana fermions, with their potential for new, decoherence-free quantum computing architectures. In this paper we undertake a study on high-quality single crystal of $\alpha-RuCl_3$ which has been identified as a material realizing a proximate Kitaev state, a topological quantum state with magnetic Majorana fermions. Four-dimensional tomographic reconstruction of dynamical correlations measured using neutrons is uniquely powerful for probing such magnetic states. We discover unusual signals, including an unprecedented column of scattering over a large energy interval around the Brillouin zone center which is remarkably stable with temperature. This is straightforwardly accounted for in terms of the Majorana excitations present in Kitaev's topological quantum spin liquid. Other, more delicate, features in the scattering can be transparently associated with perturbations to an ideal model. This opens a window on emergent magnetic Majorana fermions in correlated materials.

Neutron tomography of magnetic Majorana fermions in a proximate quantum spin liquid

Inside cells, machines called ribosomes assemble proteins from building blocks known as amino acids. Cells can alter the numbers of ribosomes they produce to match the cell’s demand for new proteins. For instance, when cells grow they require a lot of new proteins and therefore more ribosomes are produced. However, when cells face harsh conditions that cause stress (e.g. exposure to UV radiation or a harmful chemical) they generally stop growing and therefore need fewer ribosomes. In human and other eukaryotic cells, ribosomes are assembled in a structure called the nucleolus. However, because the nucleolus is not separated from the rest of the cell by a membrane, it was not clear how it is able to accumulate large quantities of the proteins and other molecules needed to make ribosomes. Recent work suggests that the nucleolus is formed through a process referred to as “phase separation” in which the liquid in a particular region of the cell has different physical properties to the liquid surrounding it. This is like how oil and water form separate layers when mixed. A protein called nucleophosmin is found at high levels in the nucleolus where it interacts with many other proteins, including those involved in making ribosomes. Nucleophosmin binds to motifs within these proteins that contain multiple copies of an amino acid called arginine (referred to as R-motifs). Now, Mitrea et al. investigate how nucleophosmin binds to R-motif proteins and whether this is important for assembling the nucleolus. A search for R-motifs in a list of over a hundred proteins known to bind to nucleophosmin showed that the majority of these proteins contained multiple R-motifs. Furthermore, when high levels of nucleophosmin and the R-motif proteins were present, they underwent phase separation. Next, Mitrea et al. examine the changes in how nucleophosmin and a ribosomal protein interact before and after phase separation. The experiments show that many molecules of nucleophosmin bind to each other and that multiple regions in nucleophosmin are able to interact with the R-motifs. Together, these interactions produce large assemblies of proteins that result in the creation of separate liquid layers. Furthermore, the experiments show that R-motif proteins and other molecules needed to make ribosomes can be brought together within the same liquid phase by nucleophosmin. Mitrea et al.’s findings provide the first insights into the role of nucleophosmin in the molecular organisation of the nucleolus. The next challenge is to understand how this organisation promotes the production of ribosomes and helps the cell to respond to stressful situations.

Nucleophosmin integrates within the nucleolus via multi-modal interactions with proteins displaying R-rich linear motifs and rRNA

A detailed and systematic neutron-scattering study uncovers a continuum of magnetic excitations down to 0.06 K in the triangular quantum magnet YbMgGaO4 — an observation consistent with quantum spin liquid behaviour. A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is an exotic state of matter in which electrons’ spins are quantum entangled over long distances, but do not show magnetic order in the zero-temperature limit1. The observation of QSL states is a central aim of experimental physics, because they host collective excitations that transcend our knowledge of quantum matter; however, examples in real materials are scarce2. Here, we report neutron-scattering experiments on YbMgGaO4, a QSL candidate in which Yb3+ ions with effective spin-1/2 occupy a triangular lattice3,4,5,6. Our measurements reveal a continuum of magnetic excitations—the essential experimental hallmark of a QSL7—at very low temperature (0.06 K). The origin of this peculiar excitation spectrum is a crucial question, because isotropic nearest-neighbour interactions do not yield a QSL ground state on the triangular lattice8. Using measurements in the field-polarized state, we identify antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbour interactions9,10,11,12, spin-space anisotropies4,10,13,14, and chemical disorder15 between the magnetic layers as key ingredients in YbMgGaO4.
