Iron ore is generally transported using a traditional method that releases significant amounts of dust into the environment. In contrast, the pipeline transportation of slurry is noticeably a sustainable approach for efficiently transporting iron ore by reducing the environmental pollution. The interparticle interaction of the iron ore particles should be mutually repulsive for steady dispersion. Surfactants and polymers adsorb efficiently at the solid/liquid interface due to their amphiphilic character, rendering the surface hydrophilic or hydrophobic to create a stable dispersion. The present review discusses the interaction of surfactants on the stabilization of solid particles for the ease of pipeline transportation using various types of stabilization mechanisms. In addition to the effect of surfactant alone, its combination with some other parameters such as particle size distribution, temperature, solid concentration, etc. has been discussed. The review also describes the detailed classification of iron ore, surfactant, and characteristic properties of surfactants.

Influence of Surfactant for Stabilization and Pipeline Transportation of Iron Ore Water Slurry: A Review

The ever-increasing demand for steel and the subsequent depletion of high-grade ores requires the massive utilization of low-grade iron ores. In the present study, an iron ore slime sample containing 56.1% Fe was investigated using physical beneficiation, carbothermal reduction, and a microwave-assisted process; however, physical beneficiation and microwave exposure were found to be inefficient as they yielded lower iron recovery. Using coconut shell as an alternative reductant was found to be promising and does not lead to the formation of higher iron oxides, such as fayalite and wustite phases. The microwave-assisted carbothermal reduction was found at par with conventional reduction, saving time and heating. The optimum magnetic concentrate obtained in both carbothermal reduction routes (microwave and muffle furnace: Fe grade, Fe recovery, and yield of 64.3, 97, and 84%, and 67, 99, and 83%, respectively) are suitable for alternative iron-making or blast furnace units.

Additive Manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for Biomedical Applications

Friction stir processing (FSP) is a solid-state and effective process for surface modification of aluminium alloys. In this study the AA5052 alloy, widely used in marine applications, has been subjected to FSP. The FSP trials have been carried out by altering the FSP process parameters (tool rotation speed, tool traverse speed, and shoulder diameter). The friction stir processed specimens have been characterised / tested for microstructure, microhardness, sliding wear, immersion corrosion, and electrochemical corrosion. The hybrid polynomial – radial basis function-based models have been developed to determine the relationship between the process parameters and the evaluated properties. Furthermore, the optimum parameters for obtaining high hardness, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance have been determined. Microstructure evaluation in the friction stir processed specimens has shown refinement and uniform dispersion of β particles throughout the αAl matrix. The results show that the improvement in properties is a result of the homogeneous dispersion of secondary β phase particles in the matrix. Friction stir processing of AA5052 alloy has improved hardness by ~14.5%, wear resistance by ~83%, and corrosion resistance ~87%. The optimum process window for friction stir processing of AA5052 alloy is tool rotation speed between 500 rpm and 900 rpm, tool traverse speed between 10 mm/min and 30 mm/min, and tool shoulder diameter of 18 mm and 21 mm.
