A survey of nematode species parasitizing Brazilian birds is presented, with enough data to provide their specific identification. The first section refers to the survey of the species, related to 17 superfamilies, 23 families, 75 genera and 257 species that are illustrated and measurement tables are given. The second section is concerned to the catalogue of host birds which includes 54 families. 361 species. and their respective parasite nematodes. The identification of these helminths is achieved by means of keys to the superfamilies. families and genera. Specific determination is induced through the figures and tables as above mentioned.

Seventy-four genera comprising approximately 140 named and 75 undetermined species of adult and larval nematodes are associated with about 330 named and 50 undetermined species of marine, brackish and freshwater fishes from Brazilian waters. These are listed with information on their hosts, habitat, distribution and records. A key to these parasites at the generic level is provided.

Checklist of Nematoda associated with the fishes of Brazil

A comprehensive and up to date summary of the literature on the helminth parasites of lizards and amphisbaenians from South America is herein presented. One-hundred eighteen lizard species from twelve countries were reported in the literature harboring a total of 155 helminth species, being none acanthocephalans, 15 cestodes, 20 trematodes and 111 nematodes. Of these, one record was from Chile and French Guiana, three from Colombia, three from Uruguay, eight from Bolivia, nine from Surinam, 13 from Paraguay, 12 from Venezuela, 27 from Ecuador, 17 from Argentina, 39 from Peru and 103 from Brazil. The present list provides host, geographical distribution (with the respective biome, when possible), site of infection and references from the parasites. A systematic parasite-host list is also provided.

The immunogenic and protective activity of an extract of S mansoni, obtained by incubation of viable adult worms in buffered saline, was evaluated in rabbits and mice Animal immunization with this extract resulted in the development of both humoral and cellular immune response All immunized rabbits developed high levels (91 to 100%) of cytotoxic antibodies as determined by in vitro assays of cytotoxic activity of their sera against viable schistosomules Immunized animals challenged with S mansoni cercariae showed a lower parasite load than that of normal controls Protective activity was 886% and 540% in immunized rabbits and mice, respectively

Immunogenic and protective activity of an extract of Schistosoma mansoni.

Twenty species of Diplotriaena Henry & Ozoux, 1909 that occur in Brazil were studied. The tasonomy of this group of nematode recovered from birds is based mainly on the shape and size of tridents and spicules. For all the species were resistered their dimentions, hosts and regional distribution, condensed in comparative tables. Comments on some of the species were made in order to provide complementary data. A key to Brazilian Diplotriaena is also given.

Estudo das espécies brasileiras do genêro Diplotriaena Henry & Ozoux, 1909 (Nematoda, Filarioidea)

With this work, we went through the Brazilian Procamallanus, all of them but one recovered from freshwater fishes. We describe Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) paraensis n. sp., which is related to Procamallanus (S.) pexatus pinto, Fabio, Noronha & Rolas, 1976 and to Procamallanus (S.) inopinatus Travassos, Artigas & Pereira, 1928. Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) hilarii Vaz & Pereira, 1934 is redescribed. The adapted and modified original descriptions of Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) macaensis Vicente & Santos, 1972 and Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) barroslimai Pereira, 1935 are included. The latter should be considered a synonym of P. (S.) inopinatus, but the lack of the type sample or fresh material and substantial data prevented us to do so. Therefore, its validity is rather doubtful as also suggested by Kloss (1966), and for this reason it was not included in the key to the species. All the Brazilian Procamallanus species recovered from characid fishes were discussed in order to let one knows what are the really valid ones up to now. We also list the unidentified damaged material which was put only under the genus, as well as the hosts' scientific and common names and their geographical distribution.
