Re-intubation increases the risk of nosocomial pneumonia in patients needing mechanical ventilation.
Antoni Torres,José M. Gatell,E Aznar,Mustafa El-Ebiary,J. Puig de la Bellacasa,Julia Valls González,Miquel Ferrer,R Rodriguez-Roisin +7 more
TL;DR: It is concluded that re-intubation is a risk factor for ventilator-associated pneumonia and might be avoided in a substantial number of cases and semirecumbency during the period between extubation and re-intsubation may play a role in nosocomial pneumonia development in patients who need re- Intubation.
Journal ArticleDOI
Physiological changes in respiratory function associated with ageing.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence of the effectiveness of continuous positive airway pressure in the treatment of sleep apnea/hypopnea syndrome.
Eugeni Ballester,Joan Ramon Badia,Lourdes Hernández,Eva Carrasco,J de Pablo,C Fornas,R Rodriguez-Roisin,J.M. Montserrat +7 more
TL;DR: The relief of sleepiness and other SAHS-related clinical symptoms and improvement in perceived health status was much greater in Group 2 receiving CT + CPAP compared with Group 1, only receiving CT.
Journal ArticleDOI
Semirecumbent position protects from pulmonary aspiration but not completely from gastroesophageal reflux in mechanically ventilated patients.
Mauricio Orozco-Levi,A. Torres,Miquel Ferrer,C. Piera,Mustafa El-Ebiary,J P de la Bellacasa,R Rodriguez-Roisin +6 more
TL;DR: The results strongly support that GER in mechanically ventilated patients with a nasogastric tube is a feature occurring irrespective of body position, and that semirecumbent position does not protect completely from GER and subsequently from oropharyngeal colonization from gastric origin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Community-acquired pneumonia in the elderly: A multivariate analysis of risk and prognostic factors.
Raúl Riquelme,Antoni Torres,Mustafa El-Ebiary,J P de la Bellacasa,Ramon Estruch,Josep Mensa,Joaquim Fernández-Solà,Carme Hernandez,R Rodriguez-Roisin +8 more
TL;DR: The multivariate analysis showed that patients had a worse prognosis if they were previously bedridden, had prior swallowing disorders, body temperature on admission was less than 37 degrees C, respiratory frequency was greater than 30/min or had three or more affected lobes on chest radiograph.
