In general, Micropower Impulse Radar (MIR) depends on Ultra-Wideband (UWB) transmission systems. UWB technology can supply innovative new systems and products that have an obvious value for radar and communications uses. Important applications include bridge-deck inspection systems, ground penetrating radar, mine detection, and precise distance resolution for such things as liquid level measurement. Most of these UWB inspection and measurement methods have some unique qualities, which need to be pursued. Therefore, in considering changes to Part 15 the FCC needs to take into account the unique features of UWB technology. MIR is applicable to two general types of UWB systems: radar systems and communications systems. Currently LLNL and its licensees are focusing on radar or radar type systems. LLNL is evaluating MIR for specialized communication systems. MIR is a relatively low power technology. Therefore, MIR systems seem to have a low potential for causing harmful interference to other users of the spectrum since the transmitted signal is spread over a wide bandwidth, which results in a relatively low spectral power density.

Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a superior technology for the high-speed data rate of wire-line and wireless communication systems. The OFDM has many advantages over other techniques such as its high capacity and immunity against multipath fading channels. However, one of the main drawbacks of the OFDM system is the high-peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) that leads the system to produce in-band distortion and out-of-band radiation because of the non-linearity of the high-power amplifiers. Therefore, numerous techniques have been proposed to overcome the PAPR problem such as selective mapping, partial transmit sequence (PTS), clipping, and nonlinear companding. In this paper, the PTS technique was analytically reviewed as one of the important methods to reduce the high PAPR problem. The PAPR performance and the computational complexity level are discussed in terms of modifying the PTS technique in the frequency domain, time domain and modulation stage (inverse fast Fourier transform block). Moreover, the numerical statistic comparison of the current modified-PTS methods is introduced, and the criteria for selecting the suitable modified-PTS method in the OFDM system are also given. The simulation and the numerical calculations results show that the rows exchange-interleaving PTS scheme is the best method for reducing the PAPR value with low complexly in the frequency domain, and the cooperative PTS method is the best among the modulation stage methods, while the cyclic shift sequence PTS method achieves the superior performance in PAPR reduction and computational complexity for the time domain methods.

A Review of Partial Transmit Sequence for PAPR Reduction in the OFDM Systems

Smart grid (SG), an evolving concept in the modern power infrastructure, enables the two-way flow of electricity and data between the peers within the electricity system networks (ESN) and its clusters. The self-healing capabilities of SG allow the peers to become active partakers in ESN. In general, the SG is intended to replace the fossil fuel-rich conventional grid with the distributed energy resources (DER) and pools numerous existing and emerging know-hows like information and digital communications technologies together to manage countless operations. With this, the SG will able to “detect, react, and pro-act” to changes in usage and address multiple issues, thereby ensuring timely grid operations. However, the “detect, react, and pro-act” features in DER-based SG can only be accomplished at the fullest level with the use of technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), and the Blockchain (BC). The techniques associated with AI include fuzzy logic, knowledge-based systems, and neural networks. They have brought advances in controlling DER-based SG. The IoT and BC have also enabled various services like data sensing, data storage, secured, transparent, and traceable digital transactions among ESN peers and its clusters. These promising technologies have gone through fast technological evolution in the past decade, and their applications have increased rapidly in ESN. Hence, this study discusses the SG and applications of AI, IoT, and BC. First, a comprehensive survey of the DER, power electronics components and their control, electric vehicles (EVs) as load components, and communication and cybersecurity issues are carried out. Second, the role played by AI-based analytics, IoT components along with energy internet architecture, and the BC assistance in improving SG services are thoroughly discussed. This study revealed that AI, IoT, and BC provide automated services to peers by monitoring real-time information about the ESN, thereby enhancing reliability, availability, resilience, stability, security, and sustainability.

Distributed Energy Resources and the Application of AI, IoT, and Blockchain in Smart Grids

This study proposed the use of coplanar waveguide Ultrawide-band strawberry artistic shaped printed monopole (SAPM) antenna with a single-layer frequency selective surface (FSS) as the metallic plate to improve the gain of antenna application. The intersection of six cylinders is used to structure the strawberry artistic shaped radiating element, which leads to enhancing the antenna bandwidth. The proposed FSS reflectors used a $10\times10$ array with the unit cell of 6mm $\times6$ mm in introducing a center-operating frequency. This study used the FR4 substrate with coplanar waveguide (CPW) fed to print the proposed antenna, which provided a wide impedance bandwidth of 8.85 GHz (3.05–11.9GHz) that covers the licensed Ultrawide-band. The proposed FSS transmitted a stop-band transmission coefficient, which is below −10 dB with the linear reflection phase over the bandwidth in the range from 3.05 GHz to 11.9 GHz. The UWB SAPM antenna with FSS reflector showed an improvement from 1.65 dB to 7.87 dB in the lower band and 6.3 dB to 9.68 dB in the upper band with an enhancement of 6.22 dB. The gain value is enhanced by the gaping between the antenna and FSS, which has an approximately constant gain response through the band, the gain is sustained among 7.87 dB to 9.68 dB. The total dimension of the antenna is 61mm $\times 61$ mm $\times 1.6$ mm. The proposed antenna structure provides the directional and balanced far-field pattern, which is suitable for Ultrawide-band (UWB) applications and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) applications.

The optimal generation scheduling (OGS) of hydropower units holds an important position in electric power systems, which is significantly investigated as a research issue. Hydropower has a slight social and ecological effect when compared with other types of sustainable power source. The target of long-, mid-, and short-term hydro scheduling (LMSTHS) problems is to optimize the power generation schedule of the accessible hydropower units, which generate maximum energy by utilizing the available potential during a specific period. Numerous traditional optimization procedures are first presented for making a solution to the LMSTHS problem. Lately, various optimization approaches, which have been assigned as a procedure based on experiences, have been executed to get the optimal solution of the generation scheduling of hydro systems. This article offers a complete survey of the implementation of various methods to get the OGS of hydro systems by examining the executed methods from various perspectives. Optimal solutions obtained by a collection of meta-heuristic optimization methods for various experience cases are established, and the presented methods are compared according to the case study, limitation of parameters, optimization techniques, and consideration of the main goal. Previous studies are mostly focused on hydro scheduling that is based on a reservoir of hydropower plants. Future study aspects are also considered, which are presented as the key issue surrounding the LMSTHS problem.

A Review of Optimization Algorithms in Solving Hydro Generation Scheduling Problems

A quad band-notched compact ultra-wideband (UWB) patch antenna to operate on the industry, scientific, and medical (ISM) bands are presented in this study. A modified hexagonal patch vertex-fed with a coplanar waveguide (CPW) is fabricated on an FR-4 substrate with size of 43× 28× 1.6 mm3 and fractional bandwidth of 133%. The compact antenna operates at a frequency of 2.45 GHz, which is often required for the efficient performance of ISM utilisation. The existing bands share the same bandwidth as that of UWB systems. Therefore, a notched band at 3GHz for worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX), and a further resonance band at 2.45 GHz for ISM are generated by implementing a meander-line strip on the antenna. Furthermore, the design demonstrates a couple of F-shaped slots and an inverted diamond-shaped slot on the patch. Moreover, a pair of Jshaped slots is loaded on the ground plane. The downlink C-band, wireless local area network (WLAN), and downlink X-band are rejected by the proposed slots, respectively. The current distribution, gain, radiation efficiency, and quad notched parameters of the proposed antenna are studied by using CST software. The demonstrated prototype covers an ISM band at (2.2 GHz–2.6 GHz) with a return loss of −23.45 dB and omnidirectional radiation patterns. A good agreement is observed between measured and the simulated results. This paper has presented a solution for both interference and miniaturised issues.

A Compact CPW Fed UWB Antenna with Quad Band Notch Characteristics for ISM Band Applications

A high peak-to-average-power ratio (PAPR) is the primary drawback faced by the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems in the practical applications. Meanwhile, Partial Transmit Sequence (PTS) is regarded as one of the efficient PAPR reduction techniques in OFDM systems. PTS technique depends on partitioning the input data into the several subblocks in the frequency-domain and weighting these subblocks by a set of phase factors in the time-domain. As the result, there are three common types of subblocks partitioning schemes have been adopted in the PTS technique, interleaving scheme, adjacent scheme, and pseudo-random scheme. Each one of the conventional partitioning schemes has PAPR reduction performance and a computational complexity level different from others. In this paper, a new subblock partitioning scheme named terminals exchanging segmentation (TE-PTS) scheme has been proposed to improve the PAPR performance in PTS technique better than that of the interleaving scheme. The simulation results and the numerical calculations indicate that the PAPR reduction capacity of the proposed scheme is superior to that of interleaving scheme without increasing the computational complexity.
