This research study explores the Global Positioning System (GPS), its history, and the process of discovery needed to create the most accurate GPS possible, as well as the contemporary applications of GPS technology. Starting with the first satellite in space, GPS has been a work in progress. Originally pursued by the military for improvements to military tactics, GPS has become integrated into the everyday lives of millions of people around the world. How GPS determines location is a dichotomy, with simplistic theory and complex application. Many factors go into GPS to provide a consistent, accurate location. The orbital planes the satellites are placed in provide 24/7 coverage globally, the L-band frequencies used were chosen specifically for the characteristics they possess, and the multiple atomic clocks installed on each satellite provide incredible accuracy down to the nanoseconds, which is quintessential in GPS accuracy. The applications in GPS are far reaching and more applications are continually being discovered. With as far as GPS technology has progressed, there are still several factors that degrade the signal and are a challenge to overcome. Many of these challenges can be corrected efficiently, however, others, such as scintillation and total electron content variability in the ionosphere, create major hurdles to overcome. Luckily, there are many programs that aid in the correction process of these hurdles. The History of GPS According to R. Saunders’ article ​A Short History of GPS Development,​ The Global Positioning System (GPS) has a long history of trial and error and refinement and improvement. It’s purpose has shifted from being a military strategic asset to commonplace among the general public with its use in traveling, farming, and even banking. The beginning of GPS, introduced with a simple idea, can be traced back to the Soviet Union in the late 1950’s. In 1957, the Soviet Union made history with successfully launching the first satellite in space. To track the satellite Sputnik, Physicists and Scientists at John Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory listened to the beeps Sputnik’s signals produced. They noticed that the beeps had a Doppler Effect or Doppler Shift as the satellite passed by. Much like the sound a siren makes as a fire truck approaches, then as it passes, the sound of the siren seems different. The change in timing between the beeps let the scientist know Sputnik’s location. This led to the idea of reversing that process, to give a location on the Earth. Using radio frequencies to determine location in a two dimensional plane had been around since WWII, but using satellites would push this technology into the three dimensional realm. The United States Navy, Army, and Air Force all began developing their own GPS satellites in the 1960’s, but this was no small task. With the evolution of the fifth-generation (5G) wireless network, the Internet of Things (IoT) has become a revolutionary technique that enables a diverse number of features and applications. It can able a diverse amount of devices to be connected in order to create a single communication architecture. As it has significantly expanded in recent years, it is fundamental to study this trending technology in detail and take a close look at its applications in the different domains. It represents an enabler of new communication possibilities between people and things. The main asset of this concept is its significant influence through the creation of a new world dimension. The key features required for employing a large-scale IoT are low-cost sensors, high-speed and error-tolerant data communications, smart computations, and numerous applications. This research work is presented in four main sections, including a general overview of IoT technology, a summary of previous correlated surveys, a review regarding the main IoT applications, and a section on the challenges of IoT. The purpose of this study is to fully cover the applications of IoT, including healthcare, environmental, commercial, industrial, smart cities, and infrastructural applications. This work explains the concept of IoT and defines and summarizes its main technologies and uses, offering a next-generation protocol as a solution to the challenges. IoT challenges were investigated to enhance research and development in the fields. The contribution and weaknesses of each research work cited are covered, highlighting eventual possible research questions and open matters for IoT applications to ensure a full analysis coverage of the discussed papers.

A–Z survey of Internet of Things: Architectures, protocols, applications, recent advances, future directions and recommendations

Recently, software defined networks (SDNs) and cloud computing have been widely adopted by researchers and industry. However, widespread acceptance of these novel networking paradigms has been hampered by the security threats. Advances in the processing technologies have helped attackers in increasing the attacks too, for instance, the development of Denial of Service (DoS) attacks to distributed DoS (DDoS) attacks which are seldom identified by conventional firewalls. In this paper, we present the state of art of the DDoS attacks in SDN and cloud computing scenarios. Especially, we focus on the analysis of SDN and cloud computing architecture. Besides, we also overview the research works and open problems in identifying and tackling the DDoS attacks.

A Survey on Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) Attacks in SDN and Cloud Computing Environments

The rapid growth in technology and internet connected devices has enabled Internet of Things (IoT) to be one of the important fields in computing. Standards, technologies and platforms targeting IoT ecosystem are being developed at a very fast pace. IoT enables things to communicate and coordinate decisions for many different types of applications including healthcare, home automation, disaster recovery, and industry automation. It is expected to expand to even more applications in the future. This paper surveys several standards by IEEE, IETF and ITU that enable technologies enabling the rapid growth of IoT. These standards include communications, routing, network and session layer protocols that are being developed to meet IoT requirements. The discussion also includes management and security protocols in addition to the current challenges in IoT which gives insights into the current research to solve such challenges.

Application of data-driven attack detection framework for secure operation in smart buildings

FinTech has proven its true potential in traditional financial offerings by delivering digital financial services to individuals worldwide. The pandemic has accelerated how people interact with financial services and has resulted in long-term changes to societies and economies. FinTech has expanded access to financial services and has made such changes possible. FinTech or Financial Technology refers to using new technologies for financial services. Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, and cloud computing are a few technologies currently being applied to FinTech. In this paper, we consider FinTech, which partly uses blockchain technology. Blockchain technology plays a vital role in the financial sector as it ultimately lifts trust and the need for third-party verification by using consensus-based verification. This survey provides a comprehensive summary of the most relevant blockchain-based FinTech implementations and an overview of FinTech sectors and segments. For each segment, we provide a critique and a discussion on how each blockchain implementation contributes to solving the majority of problems faced by FinTech companies and researchers. This research aims to direct the future of financial solutions by providing an outline of the applications of blockchain technology and distributed ledger technology (DLT) for FinTech. We discuss various implementations, limitations, and challenges of blockchain-based FinTech applications. We conclude this work by exploring possible strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis and future research directions.
