Adaptive and responsive surfaces through controlled reorganization of interfacial polymer layers

Three design prin- ciples are presented that allow for the molecular design of functional polymer surfaces: surface segrega- tion, surface structure, and surface reorganization. These design prin- ciples are illustrated by a descrip- tion of the behavior of model end- functional polymers that accu- rately reflect the general behavior of essentially all possible linear functional polymer architectures. Several applications of the design principles are described to show how they may be used to provide molecular engineering solutions for problems of practical interest. Molecular design of functional polymer surfaces

: Microcantilevers, one of the most common MEMS structures, have been introduced as a novel sensing paradigm nearly a decade ago. Ever since, the technology has emerged to find important applications in chemical, biological and physical sensing areas. Today the technology stands at the verge of providing the next generation of sophisticated sensors (such as artificial nose, artificial tongue) with extremely high sensitivity and miniature size. The article provides an overview of the modes of detection, theory behind the transduction mechanisms, materials employed as active layers, and some of the important applications. Emphasizing the material design aspects, the review underscores the most important findings, current trends, key challenges and future directions of the microcantilever based sensor technology.

Angle-dependent X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (ADXPS) is used to measure end group concentration depth profiles for blends of surface active ω-fluorosilane polystyrene with nonfunctional polystyrene. The fluorine signal is in all cases enhanced at the surface, indicating surface segregation of the lower surface tension fluorosilane end groups. End group segregation is enhanced by an increase in the concentration of ω-fluorosilane polystyrene, an increase in the nonfunctional polystyrene molecular weight, or a decrease in the molecular weight of the ω-fluorosilane polystyrene. A self-consistent mean-field lattice theory is developed to model the surface structure and properties of blends containing end-functional polymers. Lattice model calculations provide estimates of concentration depth profiles as a function of the blend composition, the normalized chain lengths of the blend constituents, and the surface and bulk interaction parameters, χs and χb, respectively. Measurement and Modeling of End Group Concentration Depth Profiles for ω-Fluorosilane Polystyrene and Its Blends

Self-adhesion hysteresis has been investigated in crosslinked poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) lenses using the Johnson, Kendall, and Roberts technique. The experimental conditions involved relatively short contact times for which interchain penetration effects across the interface are minimal. Only lenses that had been extracted in toluene displayed self-adhesion hysteresis. The same lenses demonstrated no adhesion hysteresis when pressed against tethered polystyrene substrates, indicating that hysteresis was caused by surface interactions and not bulk viscoelastic effects. Extraction produces hysteresis by removing the free chains, which normally lubricate the interface, inhibiting the adhesion mechanism. Self-adhesion hysteresis was only observed for networks with a high molecular weight between crosslinks. More tightly crosslinked networks did not display self-adhesion hysteresis, even at extended contact times under load.
