Abstract: Luxury research has been experiencing a major growth spurt especially in the last decade. However, when compared with other domains, it is still in its infancy. Luxury is challenged in diverse disciplines such as historical analysis (e.g., Berry 1994), econometric modeling (e.g., Bagwell and Douglas 1996), economic psychology (e.g., Mason 1981), sociology (e.g., Bourdieu 1984), and marketing (e.g., Dubois and Laurent 1993). Regarding marketing past research centered on luxury brand types (e.g., Dubois and Duquesne 1993), definition of luxury goods (e.g., Vigneron and Johnson 1999; Urkmez and Wagner 2015), wealthy consumers’ consumption behaviors (e.g., Hirschman 1988), determinants of the acquisition of luxury products (e.g., Dubois and Duquesne 1993), competitive structure of luxury markets (e.g., Dubois and Duquesne 1993), trading up for luxury goods (Silverstein and Fiske 2003), cross-cultural comparison of attitudes (e.g., Dubois and Laurent 1996), market segmentation (e.g., Dubois et al. 2005), and comparison of motivations between Asian and Western societies (e.g., Wong and Ahuvia 1998). However, there are still many aspects that were little investigated or not at all (Ciornea et al. 2012). “They [luxury brands] are poorly understood and under-investigated (Berthon et al. 2009, p. 45).
