The invention provides a high voltage capacitor suitable for measuring the voltage of an overhead power line. The capacitor dielectric (16B) is mounted directly on to the power line conductor (2), which serves as one electrode of the capacitor. The other electrode (18) of the capacitor is mounted on to the outer surface of the dielectric (16B), and is protected at each side by a guard ring (20). Stress control (22, 24) is provided between the outer capacitor electrode (18) and the guard rings (20) and also at the outer edges of the guard rings (20). The capacitor may be enclosed in an earthed housing (30). which can contain one or more current transformers (34, 36, 38). The apparatus can be used for fault detection and location, and may be used in combination with a power cable or a switch.

Electric cable terminating means for substantially inhibiting ionization at the termini in which semiconductive coatings each having a nonlinear current characteristic are applied in a cascade arrangement, relative to resistance per square, onto the insulation layer for a predetermined length between the highvoltage output end and to the ground shielding means. Each semiconductive coating has a predetermined resistance per square different in value from an adjacent coating, or coatings, and cascaded progressively upward in value from the ground shielding means so that the semiconductive coating adjacent the shielding means has the lowermost value. A conductive coating is applied at opposite ends of the cascade onto the insulation layer to and in contact with the high-voltage output end and in contact with the ground shielding means to establish electrical contact. The cascaded semiconductive coatings have sufficient resistivity so that upon application of voltage the electrical stress at the surface for said length does not exceed the ionization start level of the cable.

A composite pipe is proposed which is comprised of an aluminum pipe and a lead pipe formed in the aluminum pipe in direct contact with the inner wall of the aluminum pipe. The composite pipe is produced by supplying a lead pipe to a continuous aluminum extrusion machine which can extrude while enveloping a long object, to form an aluminum pipe on the outer periphery of the lead pipe. A method of manufacturing a coil (1) of a continuous flexible object (2), such as cable and line, and enveloping the coil to form a parcel (27) for delivery to a user, said object (2) being coiled onto an axially open, cylindrical sleeve (28) to produce said coil. According to the invention the sleeve (28) is provided with two protective rings (29, 30) and is brought to be fixed by a first tool (9) so that the sleeve (28) is firmly clamped between two parallel side supports (10, 11) and centered by centering elements (24) of the side supports, whereby a first rotatable unit (36) is formed. The cable or line (2) is attached to said first unit (36) and the unit (36) is brought to rotate in a coiling machine (3) so that the cable or line is formed to said coil (1). When the cable or line has been cut, a protective casing (40) is brought to surround the coil ( 1) between the protective rings (29, 30), and a plurality of bands (41) are brought to surround the sleeve (28) from the inside thereof, the protective rings (29, 30), the protective casing (40) and the coil (1) enclosed within these parts, without engagement with the side supports (10, 11), after which the bands (41) are tightened and their ends joined in a strong joint to form said parcel (27). A system is also described for handling the cable or line which is prepared and enveloped in the manner described, as well as tools of the structure described above and cable or line parcels manufactured according to said method.
