This is the first time that SIGMOD is held in Asia and the second time that it is held outside North America. The amazing growth rates of China in both its technology and economy fronts do not alter the image of its capital city, Beijing, being an ancient city whose recorded history stretches back more than 3,000 years. With a landscape dotted with ancient palaces and temples in the midst of modern infrastructure and architecture, Beijing is indeed a good venue for a forum of serious academic and professional exchanges, and an ideal place for meaningful entertainment and cultural immersion on the side.

As in previous two years, SIGMOD 2007 accepted all papers that the Program Committee considered appropriate to accept, with no predefined "quota" based on the duration of the conference or other non-technical factors. The 88 members of the Program Committee were very thorough and dedicated, and accepted only 70 papers out of the 480 submissions giving an acceptance ratio of 14.6% (which is slightly higher than SIGMOD 2006). We adopted the author feedback process started in SIGMOD 2005 and the two-phase review process initiated in SIGMOD 2006. Two reviews were requested for every paper in the first phase and only papers that were deemed interesting by at least one of the two reviewers were considered for an additional review and for follow-up discussions. However, for a small number of papers, the third review was initiated due to the uncertainty shown in the first two reviews. In total, around 60% of the submissions were reviewed in the second phase and the author feedback process was then initiated for papers in which the Program Committee had a divided opinion or explicitly sought for feedback. All submissions were then actively discussed during the 18 days of online discussion. The double-blind reviewing process was further strengthened in SIGMOD 2007 by the non posting requirement of the submitted papers on the web during the reviewing period. For the benefit of the authors, the review process and the author feedback dates were clearly stated in the submission guidelines.

In SIGMOD 2007, we have invited three distinguished members from our own community as keynote speakers. As in SIGMOD 2006, we have a plenary session on SIGMOD Awards Technical talks, apart from the research papers, industrial talks, demos and tutorials. For the industrial talks, there is a session dedicated to database system development in the Far East industry. The quality and variety of the research papers, industrial talks, demos, tutorials, invited and keynote presentations have allowed us to assemble a diverse and vibrant technical program. However, with the increase in the number of research and industrial papers, as well as the plenary session, we now have five parallel tracks compared to the usual four.

Interactive Multimedia in Education and Training

This research is related to the effort to design a more representative learning system to improve the learning result of digital fashion design, through the development of interactive multimedia based on motion graphic. This research is aimed to know the effect of interactive multimedia application based on motion graphic to increase the mastery of the concept and skill of the students to making fashion designing in digital format. The research method used is quasi experiment with research design of Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The lectures are conducted in two different classes, namely class A as the Experimental Class and class B as the Control Class. From the calculation result after interpreted using Normalize Gain, there is an increase of higher learning result in student with interactive learning based on motion graphic, compared with student achievement on conventional learning. In this research, interactive multimedia learning based on motion graphic is effective toward the improvement of student learning in concept mastering indicator and on the aspect of making fashion design in digital format.

The Effectiveness of Using Interactive Multimedia Based on Motion Graphic in Concept Mastering Enhancement and Fashion Designing Skill in Digital Format

Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANET) is made up of mobile devices which form an infrastructure-less network. In MANET, the devices can change its location and configure itself at any time. Hence, there is a possibility for the network to be prone to abnormal network events due to certain factors like error in the links, overflow in the buffers, layers, and so forth. So, in this paper, a cross-layer based congestion detection and routing protocol is proposed using Fuzzy logic. In this protocol, whenever a network event occurs, the kind of event occurring is recognized in order to handle it accordingly. Next, the alternate routes for data transmission are determined by applying the concept of fuzzy logic on some of the critical factors. Based on the fuzzy inference rules, appropriate routes are selected and data messages are transmitted successfully.

Cross-layer based congestion detection and routing protocol using fuzzy logic for MANET

The periodicity search in longest common subsequences in multiple strings has a number of application, is an interesting data mining problem. Periodicity is very common practice in longest common subsequence mining algorithm. This work introduces a new parallel algorithm for finding periodicity in multiple strings. Few existing algorithms lacks in poor scalability, lacks in finding all longest pattern, and for finding symbol, partial and full periodicity. We designed the algorithm using FP-tree for finding periodicity for most common longest substring in multiple sources. We introduce a parallel algorithm for Constraint Based Periodic Pattern Mining (CBPPM) algorithm, which takes O( kN ) for finding periodicity and O((N×L×h)/p) time for MLCS pattern. We tested parallel algorithm on a coarse-grained multi-computer (BSP/CGM) model with p<√m processors that takes O(N×L√p) space per processor, with O(log p) communication rounds. We derive a practical implementation that works better for arbitrary length of input sequence. The algorithm is noise resilient, and shown its performance in presence of replacement, insertion, deletion, or mixture of these types of noise. We experimented with synthetic and real data reveals a near linear speedup with scalable performance. The comparative study shows algorithm's applicability and effectiveness, generally more noise resilient.

Constraint Based Periodic Pattern Mining in Multiple Longest Common Subsequences

Congestion deteriorates the network performance. In this paper various congestion control AQM algorithm are analyzed and surveyed with their shortcomings and their advantages. The main objective of the paper is to study existing AQM algorithm and develop a new AQM algorithm that gives better result than the existing algorithm. AQM are the router based mechanism for early detection of congestion in the computer network. The basic idea of AQM is to sense and detect congestion in advance and to inform the sender to reduce its sending rate, thereby reducing the number of packets sent in the network and control the congestion. There are several AQM algorithms that controls the congestion. In this paper, we have surveyed, compared and analyzed Random Early Detection (RED), Flow Random Early Detection (FRED), Stabilized Random Early Detection (SRED), Stochastic Fair Queuing (SFQ), Random Exponential Marking (REM), BLUE, Stochastic Fair BLUE (SFB) AQM algorithms. Performance parameter are tested and evaluated in NS2 simulator. After analyzing it was found that RED AQM compared with SFQ and REM achieved best result in terms of delay. SFQ had minimum average ratio and RED had max loos ratio. REM algorithm showed the best result with respect to throughput loss ratio and link utilization. Improvement: After analyzing and comparing several AQM algorithm it was found that no single algorithm can solve all the problems. Hence a research is needed to develop a new AQM algorithm that has good link utilization, is fair enough, has less loss ratio, require less space and easy for configuration.

Comparative Analysis and Comparison of Various AQM Algorithm for High Speed

The efficient modeling of communication networks and the impact of TCP/IP behavior in satellite constellations is an important study. The divergent properties of satellite networks are deployment height, motion, direction, link capacity which differ from one satellite constellations to another. So, certainly the behavior of TCP/IP which was designed for wired channels will considerably differ from one satellite constellations than another. In this paper, we are evaluating the performance of different TCP Congestion algorithms on 2 different satellite constellations, Iridium and Teledesic with respect to certain parameters. The three TCP congestion control algorithms, vegas, reno and bic are evaluated on the simulated satellite network and the performance of the three algorithms under different satellites constellation is measured using suitable metrics to improve the transmission of data packets over satellite links.

Education is required for every individual in life for a formative effect of the mind. Education has been formally recognized as a human right [1]. This is achieved by different stages of learning known as primary, secondary, higher, adult, alternative and indigenous education. Learning technique is standardized at every stage of education which can be commonly adapted by a normal learner, but in case of children with special needs, it has to be more customized and individualized. This process involves the individually planned and systematically monitored arrangement of teaching procedures. A study has been conducted to implement a better educational methodology using multimedia for the optimized learning of children with special needs (CSN) in UAE.

cloud computing platform is de-facto and strategic component of corporate and end user applications usage in pervasive and ubiquitous manner. The level based services makes the higher possibilities of availability, scalability, collaborative in most cost effective way. However integration of various service layers into cloud stack also invites intrinsic threats, risk and vulnerabilities, thus security become prime concern for the adaptabilities. This paper mainly focus on understanding the changing trends of usage of cloud computing platform for various services, fundamental research approaches towards cloud security and finally need of requirements for strengthening the security protocol. The facts, concept and statistics illustrated in this paper is of extensive use to the researchers, industries and academicians towards developing new mechanisms and protocol for future secured cloud framework.
