This book by a teacher of statistics (as well as a consultant for \"experimenters\") is a comprehensive study of the philosophical background for the statistical design of experiment. It is necessary to have some facility with algebraic notation and manipulation to be able to use the volume intelligently. The problems are presented from the theoretical point of view, without such practical examples as would be helpful for those not acquainted with mathematics. The mathematical justification for the techniques is given. As a somewhat advanced treatment of the design and analysis of experiments, this volume will be interesting and helpful for many who approach statistics theoretically as well as practically. With emphasis on the \"why,\" and with description given broadly, the author relates the subject matter to the general theory of statistics and to the general problem of experimental inference. Introduction to the Finite Element Method

Swarm intelligence (SI) is briefly defined as the collective behaviour of decentralized and self-organized swarms. The well known examples for these swarms are bird flocks, fish schools and the colony of social insects such as termites, ants and bees. In 1990s, especially two approaches based on ant colony and on fish schooling/bird flocking introduced have highly attracted the interest of researchers. Although the self-organization features are required by SI are strongly and clearly seen in honey bee colonies, unfortunately the researchers have recently started to be interested in the behaviour of these swarm systems to describe new intelligent approaches, especially from the beginning of 2000s. During a decade, several algorithms have been developed depending on different intelligent behaviours of honey bee swarms. Among those, artificial bee colony (ABC) is the one which has been most widely studied on and applied to solve the real world problems, so far. Day by day the number of researchers being interested in ABC algorithm increases rapidly. This work presents a comprehensive survey of the advances with ABC and its applications. It is hoped that this survey would be very beneficial for the researchers studying on SI, particularly ABC algorithm.

Vibration-based Damage Identification Methods: A Review and Comparative Study:

This paper considers a single-layer 2D triangular lattice system as an ideal higher-order rod and/or beam. The objective is to compare the solutions of these continuum models with the standard atomistic solutions. The accuracy of these higher-order rod and beam theories, in modeling several nano-systems, depends on the frequency of vibration. The existence of a second spectrum associated with these higher-order continuum theories and its contribution to the continuum solutions are studied on the basis of molecular dynamics (MD) results. It is shown that the second spectrum of a Timoshenko beam is less accurate with respect to the MD results but cannot be disregarded totally. Also, the existence of a second propagating mode associated with a Mindlin–Herrmann rod is substantiated by MD simulation results. The accuracy of these higher order rod and beam theories deteriorates beyond their cut-on frequencies. However, the use of higher-order rod and beam theories in several high-frequency dynamic and multiscale analyses is still justifiable.

Existence of second spectrums of Timoshenko beam and Mindlin–Herrmann rod theories on the basis of atomistic studies

A fuzzy system that automatically develops its rule base from a linearized performance model of the engine by selecting the membership functions and number of fuzzy sets is developed in this study to perform gas turbine fault isolation. The faults modeled are module faults in five modules: fan, low pressure compressor, high pressure compressor, high pressure turbine and low pressure turbine. The measurements used are deviations in exhaust gas temperature, low rotor speed, high rotor speed and fuel flow from a base line ‘good engine’. A genetic algorithm is used to tune the fuzzy sets to maximize fault isolation success rate. A novel scheme is developed which optimizes the fuzzy system using very few design variables and therefore is computationally efficient. Results with simulated data show that genetic fuzzy system isolates faults with accuracy greater than that of a manually developed fuzzy system. Furthermore, the genetic fuzzy system allows rapid development of the rule base if the fault signatures and measurement uncertainties change. In addition, the genetic fuzzy system reduces the human effort needed in the trial and error process used to design the fuzzy system. A radial basis neural network is also used to preprocess the measurements before fault isolation. The radial basis network shows significant noise reduction and when combined with the genetic fuzzy system leads to a diagnostic system that is highly robust to the presence of noise in data.

Structural Damage Detection using Spatial Fourier Coefficients of Mode Shapes of Beams Simply Supported at Both Ends

Ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) actuator for flapping insect scale wing is advantageous due to its low mass, high deflection and simple actuation mechanism. Some of the factors that affect the actuation of IPMC are the amount of hydration in the polymer membrane and the environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity etc. In structural design, the attachment of wing on the IPMC actuators is an important concern as the attached wing increases the mass of actuators thereby affecting the parameters like displacement, stiffness and resonant frequencies. Such IPMC actuators have to produce sufficient actuation force and frequency to lift and flap the attached wing. Therefore, it is relevant to study the influence of attachment of wing on the actuator parameters (displacement, resonant frequency, block force and stiffness) and performance of the actuators. This paper is divided into two parts; the first part deals with the modeling of the IPMC actuators for its effect on the level of water uptake and temperature using energy based method. The modeling method adapted is validated with the experimental procedure used to actuate the IPMC. The second part deals with the experimental analysis of IPMC actuation at dry, wet and in water conditions. The effect of end mass loading on the performance of 20 Hz, high frequency actuator (HFA) and 8.7 Hz, low frequency IPMC actuators (LFA) and sensors is studied. The IPMC actuators are attached with IPMC flapping wing at its free end and performance analysis on the attached wing is also carried out.
