We redescribe the only previously known species of Myrsidea from bulbuls, M. pycnonoti Eichler. Sixteen new species are described; they and their type hosts are: M. phillipsi ex Pycnonotus goiavier goiavier (Scopoli), M. gieferi ex P. goiavier suluensis Mearns, M. kulpai ex P. flavescens Blyth, M. finlaysoni ex P. finlaysoni Strickland, M. kathleenae ex P. cafer (L.), M. warwicki ex Ixos philippinus (J. R. Forster), M. mcclurei ex Microscelis amaurotis (Temminck), M. zeylanici ex P. zeylanicus (Gmelin), M. plumosi ex P. plumosus Blyth, M. eutiloti ex P. eutilotus (Jardine and Selby), M. adamsae ex P. urostictus (Salvadori), M. ochracei ex Criniger ochraceus F. Moore, M. borbonici ex Hypsipetes borbonicus (J. R. Forster), M. johnsoni ex P. atriceps (Temminck), M. palmai ex C. ochraceus, and M. claytoni ex P. eutilotus. A key is provided for the identification of these 17 species.

A new species

Forensic entomology is the application of the study of insects and other arthropods to legal issues, especially in a court of law. The past decade has seen a resurgence of interest in forensic investigations by entomologists. Lord & Stevenson (83) identified three categories of forensic entomology: urban, stored-product, and medicolegal. Urban forensic entomology includes such things as litigations and civil law actions involving arthropods in dwellings or as house and garden pests. Law suits dealing with the misuse of pesticides are included here. Stored-product forensic entomology generally deals with arthropod infestation or contamination of a wide range of commercial prod­ ucts (e.g. beetles or their parts in candy bars, flies in ketchup, or spiders in bathroom tissue). Like its urban counterpart, this category usually involves litigation. The third category, medicolegal forensic entomology, is the focus of this review and is the most popularized aspect of the science. It deals with arthropod involvement in events surrounding felonies, usually violent crimes such as murder, suicide, and rape, but also includes other violations such as physical abuse and contraband trafficking (116). A more accurate name for this category is medicocriminal forensic entomology (53).

Patterns in assemblages of phytophagous insects are interestingly similar to those displayed in many other groups of species. Specifically, we review eight such patterns. (1) Large areas support more species than small areas. (2) Complex habitats support more species than simple habitats. (3) Persistent habitats have more species, with narrower feeding niches, than ephemeral habitats. (4) Significant ecological (Hutchinsonian) distances exist between body sizes of successive instars. Larvae of the Hessian fly, Mayetiola destructor (Say), are shown to have three instars. The first instar feeds for approximately 6 d, during which much of the larval growth occurs. Considerable anatomical differences exist among instars. These differences are described and illustrated by drawings and SEM photographs.

The African rice gall midge, Orseolia oryzivora sp. n., is described and illustrated from adults of both sexes, larvae and pupae collected in West Africa. This species had previously been misidentified as O. oryzae (Wood-Mason), which is a major pest of rice in Asia, but the two species are morphologically distinct in the larval, pupal and adult stages. All available African material has been examined, and O. oryzivora is recorded from cultivated rice in Senegal, Upper Volta, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and the Sudan. Larvae and pupae collected from Paspalum in Upper Volta differ from typical O. oryzivora in some morphological characters and probably represent an undescribed species of Orseolia
