Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Publisher Summary This chapter presents a discussion on jet impingement heat transfer. The chapter describes the applications and physics of the flow and heat transfer phenomena, available empirical correlations and values they predict, and numerical simulation techniques and results of impinging jet devices for heat transfer. The relative strengths and drawbacks of the Reynolds stress model, algebraic stress models, shear stress transport, and v 2 f turbulence models for impinging jet flow and heat transfer are compared in the chapter. The chapter provides select model equations as well as quantitative assessments of model errors and judgments of model suitability. The review of recent impinging jet research publications identified a series of engineering research tasks that are important for improving the design and resulting performance of impinging jets: (1) clearly resolve the physical mechanisms by which multiple peaks occur in the transfer coefficient profiles, and clarify which mechanism(s) dominate in various geometries and Reynolds number regimes, (2) develop a turbulence model, and associated wall treatment if necessary, that reliably and efficiently provides time-averaged transfer coefficients, (3) develop alternate nozzle and installation geometries that provide higher efficiency, meaning improved Nu profiles at either a set flow or set blower power, and (4) further explore the effects of jet interference in jet array geometries, both experimentally and numerically. This includes improved design of exit pathways for spent flow in array installations.

Jet Impingement Heat Transfer: Physics, Correlations, and Numerical Modeling

A new 3D method of modeling convective-diffusive (CDT) heat transfer and zonal radiation transfer (ZRT) employing different calculation schemes and multi-scale curvilinear grids is presented. The coarse multiblock unstructured grid calculation domain allows use of a conservative and an accurate zonal radiation transfer method with only modest computational effort that requires only a small fraction of total processor CPU time. The blockages (e.g., bars in a furnace) and screens have their own very coarse grids. This reduces the time for defining their intersections with rays. Structured fine grid is used for convective-diffusive (CDT) calculations. The main difficulty (i.e., in coupling between CDT and ZRT numerical computations) is successfully overcome using a simple algorithm. The zonal radiation transfer method is based on a fast algorithm for calculating view factors and total exchange areas. The present approach is fast, efficient and accurate for gas fired furnaces and complex internal configurations of the work pieces with many blockages and screens. The utility of the method is demonstrated by calculating the heating of a hundred round metal bars arranged in a continuous natural gas fired furnace. Good agreement between calculations and industrial experiments is demonstrated.Copyright © 2007 by ASME

An experimental and analytical study of real surface effects on radiant heat transfer

In this paper a variety of well known computer graphics algorithms (Binary Spatial Partitioning-BSP, Bounding Box-BB, and direct method of sequential search) for ray tracing are studied numerically in the context of the view factor calculations for the zonal method of radiation heat transfer analysis in complex industrial furnace geometries. The paper reports on a modified BSP algorithm which takes into account the specific types of obstructions and their arrangement in different types of metallurgical furnaces. The modified algorithm enhances the ray tracing calculations by two to three orders of magnitude. An universal algorithm to obtain an intersection with a polyhedron obstruction is developed. The method is tested for simple three dimensional and complex furnace geometries.Copyright © 2009 by ASME

A Numerical Investigation of Ray Tracing Method in a View Factor Calculation Procedure for Zonal Radiation Heat Transfer in Complex Systems

Foam Property and Its Role in the Radiative Heat Transfer of Hybrid Materials

Lateral freezing of a porous medium saturated with an aqueous salt solution was investigated experimentally and theoretically to obtain the improved understanding of the solute redistribution during solid/liquid phase change. The emphasis was on the interaction between hydrodynamics and transport of energy and species in the solidifying and unsolidified regions and on the effect of the flow characteristics of the porous matrix and dendrite arrays. Freezing experiments were performed in a square cross-section enclosure chilled and heated from the side by imposing uniform but different temperatures, and filled with the artificial porous structure. The latticed structure of the porous matrix phase and the shadowgraph enabled the flow visualization and the observation of the solidus and liquidus positions. Simultaneous measurements of local temperature and liquid composition at selected locations were also made. An analytical model based on the mass, momentum, heat, and species conservation and relations from the phase diagram is used, and the predictions are compared with experimental data.
