PLANETARY SYSTEMS, the solar system amongst them, are believed to form as inevitable and common byproducts of star formation For orientation, an overview of the processes described in this chapter is as follows The present paradigm starts with star formation in molecular clouds Brown dwarfs are formed as the lowmass tail of this process, although some may be formed as a high-mass tail of planet formation Gas and dust in the collapsing molecular cloud which does not fall directly onto the protostar resides in a relatively long-lived accretion disk which provides the environment for the subsequent stages of planet formation Terrestrial-mass planets are formed within the disk through the progressive agglomeration of material denoted, as it grows in size, as dust, rocks, planetesimals and protoplanets A similar process typically occurring further out in the disk results in the cores of giant planets, which then gravitationally accumulate their mantles of ice and/or gas As the planet-forming bodies grow in mass, growth and dynamics become more dominated by gravitational interactions Towards the final phases, and before the remaining gas is lost through accretion or dispersal, the gas provides a viscous medium at least partially responsible for planetary migration Some migration also occurs during these later stages as a result of gravitational scattering between the (proto-)planets and the residual sea of planetesimals The final structural stabilisation of the planetary system may be affected by planet–planet interactions, until a configuration emerges which may be dynamically stable over billions of years The current observational data for exoplanet systems is broadly compatible with this overall picture Other constraints come from a substantial body of detailed observations of the solar system (Chapter 12) Context and present paradigm An understanding of howplanets formis essential in understanding and interpreting the considerable range of observed planetary system architectures and dynamics Today, the most widely considered solar nebula theory holds that planet formation in the solar system, and by inference in other exoplanet systems, follows on from the process of star formation and accretion disk formation, through the agglomeration of residual material as the protoplanetary disk collapses and evolves

The detection of transiting exoplanets in time-series photometry requires the removal or modeling of instrumental and stellar noise. While instrumental systematics can be reduced using methods such as pixel level decorrelation, removing stellar trends while preserving transit signals proves challenging. Due to vast archives of light curves from recent transit surveys, there is a strong need for accurate automatic detrending, without human intervention. A large variety of detrending algorithms are in active use, but their comparative performance for transit discovery is unexplored. We benchmark all commonly used detrending methods against hundreds of Kepler, K2, and TESS planets, selected to represent the most difficult cases for systems with small planet-to-star radius ratios. The full parameter range is explored for each method to determine the best choices for planet discovery. We conclude that the ideal method is a time-windowed slider with an iterative robust location estimator based on Tukey's biweight. This method recovers 99% and 94% of the shallowest Kepler and K2 planets, respectively. We include an additional analysis for young stars with extreme variability and conclude they are best treated using a spline-based method with a robust Huber estimator. All stellar detrending methods explored are available for public use in wotan, an open-source Python package on GitHub (see this https URL).

Wōtan: Comprehensive Time-series Detrending in Python

Precise abundances of 18 elements have been derived for 10 stars known to host giant planets from high signal-to-noise ratio, high-resolution echelle spectroscopy. Internal uncertainties in the derived abundances are typically 0.05?dex. The stars in our sample have all been previously shown to have abundances that correlate with the condensation temperature (T c) of the elements in the sense of increasing abundances with increasing T c; these trends have been interpreted as evidence that the stars may have accreted H-depleted planetary material. Our newly derived abundances also correlate positively with T c, although slopes of linear least-square fits to the [m/H]-T c relations for all but two stars are smaller here than in previous studies. When considering the refractory elements (T c >900 K) only, which may be more sensitive to planet formation processes, the sample can be separated into a group with positive slopes (four stars) and a group with flat or negative slopes (six stars). The four stars with positive slopes have very close-in giant planets (three at 0.05 AU) and slopes that fall above the general Galactic chemical evolution trend. We suggest that these stars have accreted refractory-rich planet material but not to the extent that would increase significantly the overall stellar metallicity. The flat or negative slopes of the remaining six stars are consistent with recent suggestions of a planet formation signature, although we show that the trends may be the result of Galactic chemical evolution.

Abundances of Stars with Planets: Trends with Condensation Temperature

We have searched Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars (MOST) satellite photometry obtained in 2004, 2005, and 2007 of the solar-type star HD 209458 for Trojan asteroid swarms dynamically coupled with the system's transiting hot Jupiter HD 209458b. Observations of the presence and nature of asteroids around other stars would provide unique constraints on migration models of exoplanetary systems. Our results set an upper limit on the optical depth of Trojans in the HD 209458 system that can be used to guide current and future searches of similar systems by upcoming missions. Using cross-correlation methods with artificial signals implanted in the data, we find that our detection limit corresponds to a relative Trojan transit depth of 1 ×10–4, equivalent to ~1 lunar mass of asteroids, assuming power-law Trojan size distributions similar to Jupiter's Trojans in our solar system. We confirm with dynamical interpretations that some asteroids could have migrated inward with the planet to its current orbit at 0.045 AU, and that the Yarkovsky effect is ineffective at eliminating objects of >1 m in size. However, using numerical models of collisional evolution we find that, due to high relative speeds in this confined Trojan environment, collisions destroy the vast majority of the asteroids in <10 Myr. Our modeling indicates that the best candidates to search for exoTrojan swarms in 1:1 mean resonance orbits with hot Jupiters are young systems (ages of about 1 Myr or less). Years of Kepler satellite monitoring of such a system could detect an asteroid swarm with a predicted transit depth of 3 × 10–7.
