Requirements and Variability Affecting the Durability of Bonded Joints
TL;DR: This paper firstly reveals that when assessing if a bonded joint meets the certification requirements inherent in MIL-STD-1530D and the US Joint Services Standard JSSG2006 it is necessary to ensure that there is no yielding at all in the adhesive layer at 115% of design limit load and that the joint must be able to withstand design ultimate load.
Journal ArticleDOI
Determination of stress components from thermoelastic data without boundary conditions
T.G. Ryall,M. Heller,Rhys Jones +2 more
TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that by using an appropriate Airy stress function the separated stress components can be obtained, almost always, with knowledge of these two components, since the second harmonic response is small compared to the noise level.
Journal ArticleDOI
Environmental evaluation of repairs to fuselage lap joints
TL;DR: In this paper, the results of a fatigue test program undertaken to investigate repairs to multi-site damage in aircraft fuselage lap joints were presented, which demonstrated that a boron/epoxy composite doubler bonded over the joint should significantly increase the fatigue life of the structure and that environmental effects are negligible.
Journal ArticleDOI
Experimental studies into short crack growth
Rhys Jones,Simon Barter,Fei Chen +2 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined short crack growth in two quite different materials, viz: 7050-T7451 aluminium alloy and a head hardened rail steel, and found that cracking crack growth conforms to the Generalised Frost-Dugdale model.
Journal ArticleDOI
Stress intensity factor solutions for finite body with quarter-elliptical flaws emanating from a notch
TL;DR: In this article, a new simple engineering method for estimating the stress-intensity factor around a quarter-elliptical cracks emanating from a notch was presented, which does not require the crack to be explicitly modelled.
