Mesh-based simulations are central to modeling complex physical systems in many disciplines across science and engineering. Mesh representations support powerful numerical integration methods and their resolution can be adapted to strike favorable trade-offs between accuracy and efficiency. However, high-dimensional scientific simulations are very expensive to run, and solvers and parameters must often be tuned individually to each system studied. Here we introduce MeshGraphNets, a framework for learning mesh-based simulations using graph neural networks. Our model can be trained to pass messages on a mesh graph and to adapt the mesh discretization during forward simulation. Our results show it can accurately predict the dynamics of a wide range of physical systems, including aerodynamics, structural mechanics, and cloth. The model's adaptivity supports learning resolution-independent dynamics and can scale to more complex state spaces at test time. Our method is also highly efficient, running 1-2 orders of magnitude faster than the simulation on which it is trained. Our approach broadens the range of problems on which neural network simulators can operate and promises to improve the efficiency of complex, scientific modeling tasks.

Learning Mesh-Based Simulation with Graph Networks

Metal additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, is a disruptive manufacturing technology in which complex engineering parts are produced in a layer-by-layer manner, using a high-energy heating source and powder, wire or sheet as feeding material. The current paper aims to review the achievements in AM of steels in its ability to obtain superior properties that cannot be achieved through conventional manufacturing routes, thanks to the unique microstructural evolution in AM. The challenges that AM encounters are also reviewed, and suggestions for overcoming these challenges are provided if applicable. We focus on laser powder bed fusion and directed energy deposition as these two methods are currently the most common AM methods to process steels. The main foci are on austenitic stainless steels and maraging/precipitation-hardened (PH) steels, the two so far most widely used classes of steels in AM, before summarising the state-of-the-art of AM of other classes of steels. Our comprehensive review highlights that a wide range of steels can be processed by AM. The unique microstructural features including hierarchical (sub)grains and fine precipitates induced by AM result in enhancements of strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance of AM steels when compared to their conventional counterparts. Achieving an acceptable ductility and fatigue performance remains a challenge in AM steels. AM also acts as an intrinsic heat treatment, triggering ‘in situ’ phase transformations including tempering and other precipitation phenomena in different grades of steels such as PH steels and tool steels. A thorough discussion of the performance of AM steels as a function of these unique microstructural features is presented in this review.

Nanotechnology involves the use of materials with components, such as fibers, grains and particles, that have dimensions of less than 100 nm. While numerous advantages of nanomaterials have been elucidated for catalytic, processing, mechanical, electrical, and optical applications, few have been described for orthopedic applications. Better orthopedic biomaterials are needed since the average lifetime of a bone biomaterial is less than 15 years. This review discusses recent studies that have been conducted to determine the efficacy of nanophase materials as bone implants. In doing so, it is suggested that nanophase materials can be synthesized to possess similar nanometer dimensions to components of bone tissue to promote new bone formation, compared with conventional orthopedic implant materials.

Selective laser melting has received a great deal of attention in recent years. Nevertheless, research has been mainly focused on the technical issues and their relationship with the final microstructure and monotonic properties. Fatigue behaviour has rarely been addressed, and the emphasis has been placed on high-cycle regimes. The aim of this paper is, therefore, to study, in a systematic manner, the cyclic plastic behaviour of AISI 18Ni300 maraging steel manufactured by selective laser melting. For this purpose, low-cycle fatigue tests, under fully-reversed strain-controlled conditions, with strain amplitudes ranging from 0.3% to 1.0%, were performed. After testing, fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy to identify the main fatigue damage mechanisms. The analysis of results showed a non-Masing material, with a slight strain-softening behaviour, and non-linear response in both the elastic and plastic regimes. In addition, this steel exhibited a very low transition life of about 35 reversals, far below the values of conventional materials with equivalent monotonic mechanical properties, which can be attributed to the combination of high strength and low ductility. The total strain energy density, irrespective of strain amplitude, revealed itself to be a quite stable parameter throughout the lifetime. Finally, the SEM analysis showed for almost all the tested samples cracks initiated from the surface and inner defects which propagated through the rest of the cross section. A ductile/brittle fracture, with a predominance of brittle fracture, was observed in the samples, owing to the presence of defects which make it easier to spread the microcracks.
