The output power of a single-mode CW dye ring laser can be enhanced by 50 percent by changing over from standing-wave (SW) operation to traveling-wave (TW) operation. This effect is attributed to smoothing out the SW pattern in the active medium, which gives rise to spatial inhomogeneities of the inversion.

Influence of spatial hole burning on the output power of a CW dye ring laser

Successful operation of an integrated optical distributed‐feedback (DFB) dye laser in which generated light is confined in a V‐groove optical channel waveguide is reported. Both the channel waveguide and second‐order diffraction grating for DFB operation are formed by anisotropic‐etching the silicon substrate. Polyurethane doped with rhodamine 110 dye is used for the laser waveguide region, while undoped polyurethane is used for channel waveguides. Use of an argon laser for pumping yields continuous output at λ=6430 A characterized by a very low threshold and a spectral width less than 2 A. The output wavelength is consistent with the grating period of 4150 A.

A simple technique is described that allows the generation of a short pulses (1 ns) from dye lasers pumped by a much longer (7 ns) N2-laser pulse. Dye-laser pulses, either with a narrow bandwidth or a short duration, can thus be obtained with the same N2-laser pump.

The behavior of a cw dye laser under variation of the output coupling has been investigated. By studying the dependence of laser threshold, output power and slope efficiency on the degree of outcoupling, numerical values for macroscopic and microscopic laser parameters have been obtained. The macroscopic data comprise values for internal cavity losses and mode matching conditions, the microscopic data refer to molecular parameters of the dye used, such as cross-sections for stimulated emission and triplet-triplet absorption.
